“Are you willing to open your minds, ears and “Yes!”
hearts?”
c. Abstraction
“Before discussing the static and dynamic
characters, I will discuss the elements of the
story.”
A short story consists of
setting; it tells the reader where and when
the story takes place.
plot; the chain of related events that take
place in a story.
theme; central idea or belief in a short
story.
point of view; is the mode of narration that
an author employs to let the readers
“hear” and “see” what takes place in a
story.
conflict; the main problem or struggle in a
story between the protagonist or the
opposing force.
characters; the people, the animals or the
entities that take part in the story. (the students are expected to raise their
hands)
“Again, what are the elements of a story?” “Ma’am, the elements of the story are
setting, plot, theme, point of view,
conflict and characters.”
In all stories, there are typically two types of
characters: the static and dynamic.
(the students will watch and listen
attentively)
“I will show you a video clip of a Filipino TV
show, Be Careful with My Heart”.
“So, Dynamic characters are defined by their
ability to change. They often undergo some very
important transformation at some point in the
story, causing them to become different people.”
“Changes considered to qualify a character as
dynamic include changes in sight or
understanding, changes in commitment, and “No, Ma’am, unless it made the character
changes in values.” different.”
“Do you think change in physical appearance is
considered?
“Changes in circumstance, even physical
circumstance, do not apply unless they result in
some change within the character's self.”
“Knowing that a character is dynamic proves that
you understand the change they underwent within
the story.”
“While, a static character does not change “Sir Chief is a dynamic character because
throughout the story. No matter what they at first he is cold-hearted, but at the end
experience, their traits remain the same.” he learned to love again.”
“You will try to distinguish which character is “Maya is a static character because she
dynamic or static character/s on the show.” stayed to be kind, caring and loving to all
the people around her.”
“Ma’am, I think they are important,
because if there are no static or dynamic
characters, the story would be boring.”
“What do you think are the importance of these “Ma’am, having those types of character
types of characters in a story?” in the story makes it more interesting to
watch/read.”
“Both dynamic and static characters are important
to a story. Without change in a character, there
might be no plot to the story. And, without
characters who remain the same, there will be no
anchors to the story.”
(the students are expected to participate)
d. Application
Groupings:
“You will be divided into 4 groups; each group
will be given cut out pictures of popular characters
that must be pasted under column of static or
dynamic character. Each character has a short line
in the back to help you distinguish between static
and dynamic. Each group will have 3
representatives to model the characters creatively
while saying their lines.”
