Big Question: How can we use different media forms to effectively raise awareness for an issue?
Learning -To have students understand the variety of ways to raise awareness for an issue
Goals: -To have students understand how different media forms can have different
impacts
-To have students understand how media forms adapt depending on the audience
Success -Students will have developed a coherent plan for their media campaign
Criteria: -Students will identify an effective media form, the purpose, and the audience
-Students will create and present a media form for an audience
-Students will receive feedback from the audience and use that feedback to inform
their reflection on the effectiveness of their media campaign
Curriculum 3. Creating Media Texts
Expectations: Purpose and Audience
3.1 identify the topic, purpose, and audience for media texts they plan to create
3.2 identify an appropriate form to suit the specific purpose and audience for a
media text they plan to create
3.3 identify conventions and techniques appropriate to the form chosen for a
media text they plan to create
3.4 produce media texts for specific purposes and audiences, using a few simple
media forms and appropriate conventions and techniques classmate about

4.1 identify, initially with support and direction, what strategies they found most
helpful in making sense of and creating media texts
4.2 explain, initially with support and direction, how their skills in listening,
speaking, reading, and writing help them to make sense of and produce media
texts
Prior -Students have worked through previous units of study about media texts where
Knowledge: they analyzed the effectiveness of different forms of media.
-Students have worked through previous units of study that focused on
understanding media forms conventions and techniques.
Unit In groups, students will create a media campaign to help raise awareness for an
Overview: issue they feel is important to their learning community. The issue must be
relevant to our learning community and be presented to an audience within our
learning community (students, teachers, principal, or parents). Possible issues to
address could include, social-emotional learning, academic issues students may
have, issues relating to the school environment (ie: littering, vandalism).
Steps: 1. With a group, decide on an issue you would like to raise awareness for, that
impacts our school community
2. Collaborate on a plan to create a media text that would help create awareness
for the issue. You should consider;
a. What form of media will you use?
b. Who is your intended audience for your media text?’
c. What characteristics will your media text have? (What will it look like?)
d. How will you know your media text was successful in conveying your message?
3. Create and revise your media form
4. Present your media to your intended audience.
5. Get feedback from your audience on the effectiveness of your media
6. Create a reflection piece on what the strengths and weaknesses of your media
campaign were.
Notes: Students will be allowed access to technology and digital tools they feel will help
them create the media form for their campaign; video cameras, tablets,
computers.
