1 2t4 (& Double Shear"i88: Aim of Microproject

1) Shear forces act parallel to a surface and push in opposite directions, which can cause shearing deformation. Shear stress is denoted by the Greek letter tau (τ). 2) Single shear occurs when plates are connected by a rivet and subjected to tension forces, creating shear stresses in the rivet. The average shear stress is equal to the force divided by the area (τave= F/A). 3) Double shear occurs when three plates are connected by a rivet and subjected to tension forces, creating shear stresses across two planes in the rivet. The average shear stress in each plane is equal to half the force divided by the area (τave= F/2A).

11 2t4[ & Double Shear”i88

● Introduction :-
Shearing forces are unaligned forces pushing one part of a body in one specific direction,
and another part of the body in the opposite direction. When the forces are aligned into each
other, they are called compression forces. An example is a deck of cards being pushed one way
on the top, and the other at the bottom, causing the cards to slide. Another example is when
wind blows at the side of a peaked roof of a house - the side walls experience a force at their
top pushing in the direction of the wind, and their bottom   in the opposite direction, from the
ground or foundation. William A. Nash      defines shear force in terms of planes: "If a plane is
passed through a body, a force acting along this plane is called a shear force or shearing force."

Shearing forces push in one direction at the top, and the opposite direction at the
bottom, causing shearing deformation.

A crack or tear may develop in a body from parallel shearing forces pushing in
opposite directions at different points of the body. If the forces were aligned and aimed
straight into each other, they would pinch or compress the body, rather than tear or crack
it.

When equal and opposite forces acts tangentially on a body across when the
resisting action, then the body tends to shear off or slide across the section . in such case ,
the stress so developed in the body is called shear stress.

it is denoted by (  q )

formula,

Shear stress(q) =      Shear force

Area of Shear

● Aim of Microproject:
To acquire knowledge about single and double shear forces.

● Intended Course Outcomes:

I) To gain information about single and double shear forces.
II) To know the applications of single and double shear forces

● Single Shear-
.                   Shear stress is a kind of stress that acts parallel or tangential to the
surface. The shear stress is denoted by τ (tau). Shearing stresses are commonly
found in rivets, pins and bolts. If the plates, which are connected by a rivet as shown

I
in the following figure, are subjected to tension forces, shear stresses will develop in
the rivet. The shear force P in the shear plane is equal to tension force F. The
average shear stress in the plane is τave= F/A. This joint is said to be in single shear.

“When two plates are connected by rivets as shown in figure  and subjected to
applied force ‘P’ as shown in fig, then the failure of riveted joint may occur due to
shearing action caused by applied force ‘ P’ .In such case, there is only one plane of
shear and hence rivets is said to in Single Shear. “

The average shear stress in the plane is τ = F/[Link]

Application:

● Double Shear :
If the plates, which are connected by a rivet as shown in the following figure, are
subjected to tension forces, shear stresses will develop in the rivet. This joint is said to be in
double shear. To determine the average shear stress in each shear plane, free-body

I
diagrams of rivet and of the portion of rivet located between the two planes are drawn.
Observing that the shear P in each of the planes is P = F/2,

The average shearing stress is   τave= F/2A

“When three plates are connected by rivets as shown in figure  and subjected to applied
force ‘P’ as shown in fig, then the failure of riveted joint may occur due to shearing action
caused by applied force ‘ P’ .In such case, there will shear in  two plates of fig and hence
rivets is said to in Double Shear.
