Betty: Yes, he has. He’s resting at home right now.
Fran: W hat’s wrong? Is it allergies? He’s suffered from allergies since he was young, hasn’t
he?
Betty: Y es, he has, but I don’t think that’s the problem. He hasn’t suffered from allergies for
a while. He has had a low fever and a cough since Friday.
Fran: Poor thing! Perhaps he has caught the flu. Have you taken him for a checkup yet?
Betty: No, I haven’t.
Fran: Why not?
Betty: I haven’t taken Tommy to see Dr. Green because Dr. Green has been too busy. I can’t
get an appointment until Wednesday.
Fran: Have you spoken to Carol? She’s the nurse who works for Dr. Green.
Betty: No, I haven’t. Carol wasn’t there when I called.
Fran: Perhaps I can help. Let me speak to Carol for you. She’s a friend of mine.
Betty: How long have you known her?
Fran: I’ve known her since college.

A It has been a busy afternoon for the doctors and nurses in the emergency room.
Earlier this afternoon a young boy fell off his bicycle. His parents brought him in to the
emergency room. Dr. Jeffrey x-rayed his arm and told him it was broken. The nurse helped the
doctor put the boy’s arm in a cast. It was very painful. This happened two hours ago. Now the
boy is feeling fine. He has already gone home with his parents.
Dr. Jeffrey also helped a woman with a sprained ankle an hour ago. He asked the nurse to put a
bandage on the woman’s ankle. After that, the doctor gave an injection to a young man with an
infected arm wound.
Half an hour ago a young woman came in. She had a deep cut in her finger. But all the doctors
and nurses were busy with other patients. Now the time is 4:30 p.m. Has a doctor seen the

Present Perfect Simple / Present Perfect Continuous

A Dear Susan,
I’m sorry I haven’t written for ages. We have been so busy since we moved to New York. We
moved into our new apartment a week ago and since then I have been painting the apartment and
shopping for furniture we need.
But I haven’t only been buying things! I’ve also been taking a course in alternative medicine.
My class has been meeting in the evenings. So far we’ve learnt a lot of acupuncture. It’s a great
way to reduce pain and stress and help people relax.
Peter has started his new job already. He has been working in a sports medicine clinic as a
massage therapist. He’s really enjoying it. Lately he has even treated some famous athletes!
Things have been so busy that we haven’t even been to a Broadway play or to Central Park yet!
Peter wants the two of us to take a special day off together. He has been planning it for weeks.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t had time off from work yet.
How have you all been? Has it been raining a lot there? Have you already finished writing your
book?
Write soon.
Love to all,
Marsha
