POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION PROCEDURE
Document No. : EKCP PMI 06 Rev 1 Date : 31/07/2020
1.0 PURPOSE:
This procedure is intended to provide instructions for carryout Positive Material Identification (PMI) for
verification of alloy and stainless steel material grades.
2.0 SCOPE:
This procedure describes the minimum requirements of PMI and covers extend of items to be checked, the
sampling requirements, identification, method, acceptance criteria and documentation requirements of
PMI.
PMI apply to identify of alloy material grades after production phases of equipments/items, unrelated to
any material certification, testing performed by the manufacturer or supplier of raw materials.
3.0 REFERENCE :
ASTM / ASME Standards.
ITP :
4.0 INSTRUMENT:
X-ray Fluorescence Technique shall be used for verification of material grade or alloy type and quantitative
analysis of alloying elements present in the base material without destroying the material.
Portable X-ray emission analyzers such as:
Arc –Met 900
X-Met 840
X-Met 880

Above instrument shall be used, the vendor can use the available instrument, but parameters identified
should be as per approved procedure only.
5.0 INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION:
The instrument should have a valid annual calibration certificate. Calibration shall be performed prior to
test to check instrument accuracy on standard sample provided by instrument manufacture or standard
test sample of valid traceability.
6.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION:
The Personnel performing the PMI test should be knowledgeable about the operation of PMI test
instrument and the PMI test method. Qualification/competency record of personnel shall be kept for
review.
7.0 PMI REQUIREMENTS:
The positive material identification checks shall be performed during or after the fabrication is
completed, but preferably prior to PWHT/hydro test and before shipment.
PMI testing shall be performed in the completed or as welded condition.
Items, components, equipments PMI examination shall be as specified in the Inspection and Test
Plan / Table listed below whichever is stringent.
“Extent of examination shall be as per approved ITP.

8.0 TESTING METHOD:
The surface condition of components to be tested shall be free from oil, dirt, paint, scale etc. that
affect the results. If any, shall be removed, usually light grinding or power brush is sufficient in the
probe seating area if not bare metal.
The operator shall demonstrate the PMI instrument accuracy and his performance abilities on the
sample of know composition. On satisfactory verification of the instrument, the actual testing shall
be commenced on individual components and the results shall be recorded. Refer Attachment – I
for essential elements which needs to be verified by PMI test.
9.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:
For acceptance the amount of alloying elements shall meet requirement as specified in the applicable
material specification. Following tolerance limits are generally accepted.
Alloying Elements in material: - Within in 10% of the specified range of valves.
Alloying Elements in weld: - Within in ± 12.5% of the range allowed in ASME Sec II C
for each element.
However the tolerance that can be finally accepted in any analysis is the tolerance of the machine used for
PMI test.

10.0 MATERIAL MARKING:
PMI carried out on material /weld shall be identified using chloride free marker /low stress stamp /color
coding as per project specification.
Material / weld which are found acceptable shall be marked “PMI OK”.
Unaccepted materials/welds are identified with a suitable marker “PMI REJ” and further disposition shall
be made through NCR.
11.0 DOCUMENTATION:
The results of the PMI examination shall be recorded in PMI report. The supplier can use their format,
provided the PMI report shall include all details / information as provided in the sample report format.
The PMI report shall be signed by the operator and witnessing/reviewing authorities in accordance with
ITP requirements.
