SENCHS Joins The Philippine Dengue Awareness

The San Enrique National Comprehensive High School joined efforts to increase awareness of dengue in the Philippines. Over 50,000 cases had already been reported halfway through the year. The local health team educated students, parents, and teachers about dengue symptoms and prevention methods. Called the "4S", these included searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites, self-protection, early medical consultation, and avoiding indiscriminate fogging. The school then conducted a "kaya-kulob" operation where students and staff cleaned the campus, removing potential breeding areas like coconut husks and bottles under the guidance of the health team.

SENCHS Joins the Philippine Dengue Awareness

The Philippines reported a staggering number of dengue cases. Only halfway into the
year, we have already seen over 50,000 reported cases. Alarming, given that the rainy
season—and thus, dengue season—has yet to truly begin.
The Department of Health together with the Local Government Unit disseminated
information to the local people of San Enrique on how to prevent the spread of Dengue
Fever in the locality. On August 1, 2017, the Health Team of San Enrique with the leadership
of Dr. Cecile Apalacio conducted the Dengue Awareness Program to the students, parents
and teachers of San Enrique National Comprehensive High School.
Dr. Cecile Apalacio talked over about Dengue Fever and its symptoms. She discussed
that Dengue is a viral sickness characterized by a variety of symptoms. The most common
are fever (of varying degrees of severity), rashes, headaches, muscle pains, and joint pains.
More severe instances of the illness tend to also present with recurrent vomiting, pain in
the abdomen, bleeding, and shortness of breath. Dengue, particularly severe dengue, can
be fatal. However, survival rates are very good for those who get proper medical care early
on. According to the WHO, survival rates go up to as much as 99% if a person gets treatment
in the early stages of the disease. Prevention is still the best method of fighting dengue. The
more widely practiced is that of managing the environment to reduce mosquito
reproduction and activity.
Since prevention is still the best method of fighting dengue, Mr. Ronilo Dagiagnao,
sanitary officer of the town presented the ‘4S’ against Dengue and other mosquito-borne
diseases. The 4S means Search & destroy mosquito breeding places, use Self-protection
measures, Seek early consultation for fever lasting more than 2 days, and Say NO to
indiscriminate fogging.
After the presentation, the San Enrique Health Team together with the SENCHS
faculty and staff as well as the students and parents did the first “S” against Dengue which is
Search and destroy mosquito breeding places. The students with the guidance of the health
team and the teachers roam around the school campus and did the “kaya-kulob” operation.
“KAYA-KULOB” Operation is searching for possible breeding places of mosquitos like
coconut husks, bottle cups, and the like. We cleaned the surrounding and made sure to
destroy the possible breeding places of the mosquito carrying dengue virus. The students
were told to wear their jackets and long socks to protect themselves while doing the said
cleaning operation. Everybody did their part and understand the importance of “4S” against
Dengue. The Operation was a success.
