Case Study of Lot

This case study examines the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of 13-year-old Lot. Physically, Lot is taller and heavier than average for his age due to vitamins he took as a child. Cognitively, Lot is able to problem solve on his own and thinks logically, placing him at the formal operations stage. Emotionally and socially, Lot is able to control his emotions appropriately, handle conflicts well, and enjoys joking with others. The study aims to understand if shared background leads to similar personality traits or if personality can differ with shared experiences.

Case Study of Lot

Introduction

This case study is about a young boy named

Lot. He is my close friend’s son, He is 13

years old, a Grade VII student in Southville

International School. This paper is focused

primarily on physical, cognitive, emotional,

and social development of Lot. It intends to

study how Lot is developing normally for his

age. I chose Lot for my case study because of

many similarities we have. That many times I

saw myself in him. I want to know what are

the reasons or causes why he has that kind of

personality like me. Is it because we have the

same background that’s why we have that

same personality or it’s just accidentally. I also want to know if those who have the same

background and same experience in life will result with the same personality or in the other

hand, different background and experience but resulting with similar personality. And also a

great idea for me as one of his looked up brother.

Lot lives with his father, older sister, older brothers and his yayas. He is the youngest in their

house that’s why all were focused on him. Their house is located along Enchanted Kingdom

in Sta. Rosa Laguna. Lot is an adopted child. Ever since he was born he never saw his

parents. That’s why he grew up with his known family. Lot never had a mother but he has

two fathers. His known father who adopted him and his second father who took care of him
every day. Even though he never had a mother, he experienced the love of a real mom

because of his yaya that became his mother ever since he was born and the love of his two

father. Because of the people around him, Lot grew up with full of care, acceptance and love.

Lot loves to play Xbox, Ps4, browsing the internet during his spare time, he engages in sports

like basketball. He likes the subjects Math and Science while Araling Panlipunan is the

subject he dislike. When I asked him why, he told me that he got sleepy and got bored

studying it. He is fond of funny and horror movies. One of his favorites is the 3 idiots. He is

amused by NBA and adores basketball players like Stephen Curry and James Lebron. He

enjoys eating beef and chicken and hates vegetables and fish. He also love sweets. After

school, he always drop by to a store like Starbucks to buy some chocolate drinks before he

goes home. Color red and black are his favorites. Lot doesn’t want to be cheated by his

friends and classmates but he is close to all of them.

Physical Development

Lot is in puberty or adolescent stage. In this stage the average weight of a 13 years old male

based on my research is must be 43 kg. But in the case of Lot, he is 58 kg. Heavier than

normal and his height is 160 cm. slightly his weight and height is not usual than other

teenagers maybe because of the vitamins he took when he was child until now it affects his

physical growth. Lot is a discreet person but in time of fun the energetic side of him comes

out. He likes outdoor activities like playing basketball, swimming, stroll with his bike and

hoverboard, he can also drive a car and park it properly. Lot is a normal growing boy, already

experiencing some changes in his body. The last time I saw Lot 2015, me and him has a big

gap in terms of height but now we almost have the same height because of his fast

development. Middle childhood is the stage where the boys should be experiencing the

growth in height. “Girls and boys grow about 2 to 3 inches and gain about 7 pounds per year
until puberty” (Cliff Notes) “Sexual and other physical maturation that occurs during puberty

is a result of hormonal changes. Appearance of pubic hair: 13.5 years old “(Stanford

Children’s Health) like in the case of Lot, he became taller, heavier, and stronger: his voices

deepen, his shoulders broaden, and he’s starting to have hair in his underarms.

Cognitive Development

During this period, Lot’s thought is more logical, flexible, organized and advance than the

last time we were together. According to Piaget’s Theory, Lot is in the formal operational

stage cognitively or known as the final stage. This stage is from adolescence and into

adulthood, roughly ages 11 to approximately 15 to 20 where Lot falls in this category.

Similarly, Lot has a normal cognitive development as evidenced by the parameters of normal

cognitive signs for a 13 year old child such us Piaget “Problem-solving” when children use

trial-and-error to solve problems.

An example scenario is when Lot borrowed my phone and try to use some applications

installed in it. He does not ask for my tutorial or instruction but he just learned from his error
or mistakes how to use it properly and correctly.

In his tutorial in home after class, when his tutor gave him task to do, Lot works diligently

and asks for assistance when needed and completes it without getting distracted. Lot pays

attention when his tutor explains something and follows what the tutor tells them to do so.

Lot likes making decisions on his own. Before he ask someone for help, he makes sure that

the person he will ask is definitely reliable. Before we went to sleep, we shared some jokes,

funny moments. And I noticed about Lot was he is a broad-minded. He’s good in creating

situation or adding some flavor in our topic that makes our conversation more appealing.

Lot’s language development learning is very good. He speaks fluent English that it’s funny

even sometimes he corrects me on my grammar. He also knows how to speak Filipino even

though he can’t understand some deep Filipino words like “alas dos” “alas tres”

“maligamgam” etc. But he can remember it when he heard it again for the second time. I can

see Lot as a good student and a teenager with normal development as expected of his age.

Emotional/Social/Behavioral

As a discreet and energetic playful 13-year old boy, Lot is good in handling conflicts and

problems. He is able to exercise his self-determination and develop his emotional maturity.

He can manage/control his feelings suitable to the situation like when he gets angry on

something but he knew that it’s not the right place, time to express it, he will just simply hide

it and wait for the perfect time to express it unlike other typical teenager who gets angry

easily. Lot is light-hearted person. He always throw a joke when we were in idle time and

when you also throw a joke to him he will laugh hard even though it’s not very funny. He got

easily bored and irritated when he’s doing nothing. That’s why to avoid that feeling he look
for something to do or someone to make fun of.
