Kenya Music Festivals: 2019 Huruma Primary School Abygael Njoki Presents Under Class: 1016H

1) A student named Abygael Njoki from Huruma Primary School presents a poem titled "Just a Smile" by V. Wafula about growing up and needing attention from parents. 2) The poem describes feeling overwhelmed by changes in one's body without understanding and craving affection from parents who seem too busy. 3) A smile from a stranger briefly fulfills the need for attention and affection but leaves one feeling numb afterwards. 4) The poem calls for education on these matters for both girls and boys to build a better future.

JUST A SMILE

BY

V. WAFULA
Today I woke up

This early morning

A morning
So beautiful
So peaceful
So wonderful
And danced to the beats of Sukuti
The rhythm of Nyatiti
The tunes of Suboti.
Though I might know not much
But I have seen this much
This much like such
That it pains from my head to toe
Heart to soul
For yesterday
I needed attention from my father
I needed affection from my own mother
But he said
Nyaluka not now.
Mother said,
That she was busy
And i must be crazy
With my face not so fair
I was left

My feelings overwhelming
Body -
My body over growing
Quicker and quickly
These changes I’m not understanding

Then-
With just a smile …
He smiled at me
Happy and gay
Gazed and back I gazed
And smiled.

With just a smile …

He said
You are clever
growing
prettier
And fancy
With just a smile ……
I needed attention
He gave me more than attention
On it he added affection
Then -
He left
After having filled my belly.
I was crazied
Lazied
Dizzied
My dreams broken
Mashed
Crushed
And shattered.

Numb
Dumb
Deaf
I was left
Tears rolling on my face
Daily
Fears shivered my body
Deadly
That my hair withered
Mama,
Papa,
If only you had given me attention
If not affection
If only you were never too busy
And with me a little bit friendly
If not cozy
And noticed the changes in my body

Mama
Papa
I’m growing
And my feelings
Will overpower my body
Overwhelm my bones.
We need education on this matter
For this girl child
Not leaving the boy child
For with no education
On this matter
Through this sector
Our future
Is doomed

Pleasure
