Module 2 Part 4

This document discusses statically indeterminate composite systems, where two or more structural members made of different materials are connected. It defines statically indeterminate systems as those where the forces in each member cannot be determined by static equilibrium alone and require additional compatibility equations. Examples are provided of analyzing compound bars consisting of a solid bar enclosed within a hollow tube, where the load sharing between members is found using equilibrium and compatibility equations. Numerical problems are worked through as illustrations.

1
Statically Indeterminate Systems -
(Composite OR Compound bars)
• When a system comprises of 2 or more members of different materials,
the forces in various members can’t be determined by the principle of
statics alone and such systems are called Statically indeterminate systems
• Additional equations, from deformation conditions of the system
(compatibility equations) are also used

2
Analysis of Compound or Composite System

• A composite/compound system consists of 2 or more bars of different

materials in parallel
• The sharing of load by each bar can be found by applying the
equilibrium and compatibility equations
• Consider a solid bar enclosed in a hollow tube as shown in fig.
