Cutting
Cutting Instructions
Please note: All strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) from selvage to selvage edge unless otherwise noted.
WOF= Width of Fabric • LOF = Length of Fabric
Fabric A (4016P-76 Banner Panel – Royal):
• Fussy cut (1) 30 ½” x 38 ½” panel.
Fabric B (1351-Grass Just Color! – Grass), cut:
• (2) 2” x 38 ½” WOF strips.
• (2) 2” x 33 ½” WOF strips.
• (3) 1 ½” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 1 ½” x 51 ½”
strips.
• (3) 1 ½” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end with diagonal seams and cut (2) 1 ½” x 45 ½”
strips.
• (5) 2 ½” x WOF strips for the binding.
Fabric C (4013-76 Allover Characters – Royal), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (2) 6” x 8 ½” strips and then cut (4) 6” squares.
Fabric D (4014-88 Alphabet – Red), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (3) 6” squares and (2) 3” x 6” strips. Trim the remaining to fabric 3” and cut
(1) 3” x 6” strip.
Fabric E (4015-77 Stars & Mini Fish – Navy), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (3) 6” squares and (2) 3” x 6” strips. Trim the remaining fabric to 3” and cut
(1) 3” x 6” strip.
Fabric F (4014-33 Alphabet – Yellow), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (2) 6” squares and (2) 3” x 6” strips.
Fabric G (4015-88 Stars & Mini Fish – Red), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (3) 6” squares and (2) 3” x 6” strips. Trim the remaining fabric to 3” and cut
(1) 3” x 6” strip.
Fabric H (4014-77 Alphabet – Navy), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (3) 6” squares and (1) 3” x 6” strips. Trim the remaining fabric to 3” and cut
(2) 3” x 6” strip.
Fabric I (4015-33 Stars & Mini Fish – Yellow), cut:
• (1) 6” x WOF strip, sub-cut (2) 6” squares. Trim the remaining fabric to 3” and cut (2) 3” x 6” strip.
Fabric J (1351-Sea Glass Just Color! – Sea Glass), cut:
• (5) 2 ¾” x WOF strips, sub-cut (64) 2 ¾” squares.
• (3) 3 ¼” x WOF strips, sub-cut (32) 3 ¼” squares.
Backing (4013-11 Allover Characters – Aqua), cut:
• (2) 61” x WOF strips. Sew the strips together and trim to 53” x 61” for the back.

Sewing
Sew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Always
press towards the darker fabric while assembling, unless otherwise noted by the arrows.
Center Block
Block Assembly B
1. Sew (1) 2” x 38 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of (1) 30 ½” x 38 ½”
Fabric A panel. Sew (1) 2” x 33 ½” Fabric B strip to the top and to the
bottom of the Fabric A panel. Trim the block to measure 32 ½” x 40 ½” to
make the Center Block (Fig. 1). A
Note: When sewing the fish blocks refer to the quilt photo and pay
attention to the fabric direction for the center fabrics. The placement of
the smaller squares depends upon the center fabric orientation. B B

2. Place (1) 2 ¾” Fabric J square on the top right side of (1) 3” x 6” Fabric D after the borders
strip, right sides together (Fig. 2). Sew across the diagonal of the square are added
from the upper left corner to the lower right corner (Fig. 2). Flip open the
triangle formed and press (Fig. 3). Trim away the excess fabric from behind
the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance.

3. Place another 2 ¾” Fabric J square on the lower right side of the 3” x 6” Fig. 1
Fabric D strip, right sides together (Fig. 4). Sew across the diagonal of the Unit 1
square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 4). Flip make2
open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from J
behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance to make (1) Unit 1 strip

5. Place (1) 2 ¾” Fabric J square on the top left corner of (1) 6” Fabric D square, right sides together (Fig. 6).
PAY ATTENTION TO THE DIRECTION OF THE FABRIC D SQUARE. Sew across the diagonal of the smaller
square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 6). Flip open the triangle formed and press
(Fig. 7). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle ¼” away from the sewn seam.
6. Follow Figure 8 for the seam direction to add a 2 ¾” Fabric J square to the lower left corner and 3 ¼”
Fabric J squares to the upper right and lower right corners of the 6” Fabric D square to make (1) Unit 2 block
(Fig. 9).
7. Repeat Steps 5-6 to make a second Unit 2 block.

8. Sew (1) Unit 1 strip to the left side of (1) Unit 2 block lengthwise and with the

Fabric J blocks touching to make (1) Block One Fish (Fig. 10). Repeat to make a second make 2
Block One Fish.
9. Place (1) 2 ¾” Fabric J square on the top left side of (1) 3” x 6” Fabric D strip, right Unit 1 Unit 2
sides together. Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the
lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric

from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance.
10. Place another 2 ¾” Fabric J square on the top right side of the 3” x 6” Fabric D strip, right sides together.
Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Flip open the
triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving a ¼” seam allowance
to make Block Two Fish tail strip.
11. Place (1) 3 ¼” Fabric J square on the top left corner of (1) 6” Fabric D square, right sides together.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE DIRECTION OF THE FABRIC D SQUARE. Sew across the diagonal of the smaller
square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim
away the excess fabric from behind the triangle ¼” away from the sewn seam. Block Two

16. Repeat Steps 2-3, 5-6 and 8 and use Figure 14 for fabric identification, location, size and seam direction
to make (2) Block Five Fish.
17. Repeat Steps 2-3, 5-6 and 8 and use Figure 15 for fabric identification, location, size and seam direction
to make (2) Block Six Fish.
18. Repeat Steps 9-13 and use Figure 16 for fabric identification, location, size and seam direction to make
(1) Block Seven Fish.

Quilt Top Assembly
(Follow the Quilt Layout while assembling the quilt top.)
22. Sew (1) Block Nine Fish, (1) Block Ten Fish, (1) 6” x 8 ½” Fabric C strip, (1) Block Seven Fish and (1)
Block Four Fish together end to end and in that order to make the Left Side Border. Pay Attention to the
orientation of the blocks. Sew the border to the Center Block.
23. Sew (1) Block Nine Fish, (1) Block Ten Fish, (1) 6” x 8 ½” Fabric C strip, (1) Block Two Fish and (1)
Block Four Fish together end to end and in that order to make the Right Side Border. Pay attention to the
orientation of the blocks. Sew the border to the Center Block.
24. Sew (1) Block One Fish, (1) Block Three Fish, (1) Block Five Fish and (1) Block Six Fish together end to
end. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks. Sew (1) 6” Fabric C square to each end of the fish strip.
Sew the sewn strip to the top of the Center Block.
25. Sew (1) Block One Fish, (1) Block Eight Fish, (1) Block Five Fish and (1) Block Six Fish together end to
end. Pay attention to the orientation of the blocks. Sew (1) 6” Fabric C square to each end of the fish strip.
Sew the sewn strip to the bottom of the Center Block.
26. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 51 ½” Fabric B strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew (1) 1 ½” x 45 ½” Fabric B strip
to the top and to the bottom of the Center Block to make the quilt top.
Layering, Quilting and Finishing
27. Press the quilt top and 53” x 61” backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top
(right side up) and baste. Quilt as desired and trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete.
Binding
28. Cut the ends of the (5) Fabric B binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make (1)
continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together.
29. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand
stitch in place.
