I. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore some of the differences in which 2 different news channels cover
sports. The study seeks to answer the research question, How do they decide what to cover and how to
approach the story? The goal is to analyze how their methods allows to captures viewers attention.
II. Introduction

This study is about the content analysis to investigate the similarities and differences between the sports
segment of the news channels NTV (International Television Channel Ltd) and ETV (Ekushey TV) over a
7-day period. Sports coverage does not usually dominate the news. However, there are exceptions notably
during world cup season both cricket & football. The IPL & BPL television market provides a particularly
interesting read. This report will highlight the key similarities and differences in the way these two news
channels cover the news.
Now let’s talk about the news channel I am covering, NTV with the slogan ‘Somoyer Sathe Agamir
Pothe’ meaning ‘heading towards the future with time’, holding Bangla language and culture close to
heart, Alhaj Mohammad Mosaddak Ali on 3 July 2003 formed Bangladesh’s first automation-based
private satellite television station International Television Channel Ltd (NTV). NTV is the most popular
Bengali language TV channel in Bangladesh that offers unbiased and comprehensive news and
entertainment program. NTV offers diverse mix of programs such as news bulletins, current affairs, talk
shows, soap operas, educational, religious, politics related programs, drama, movie, reality shows and
other entertainment programs. NTV delivers its news and entertainment programs across all platforms:
TV, Internet and Mobile (including apps) NTV also broadcasts its programs in UK, USA, Canada, Some
parts of Europe, Middle East, and beyond. NTV Online, the online news portal of the television channel
was opened through a program in Dhaka on 1 February 2015. News, views, photographs and videos are
available on the website [Link]. NTV Chairman and Managing Director Mohammad Mosaddak
Ali inaugurated the news portal in a program at BSEC Building in Dhaka at about 4:15pm on 1 February.
Ekushey Television is a private satellite television channel in Bangladesh. It broadcasts from Kawran
Bazar, Dhaka. Ekushey Television is the first Bangladeshi private television channel to broadcast national
and international news in Bangladesh. Its official transmission began on 14 April 2000. In 2011, Ekushey
became the first Bangladeshi channel to live stream all its content online to viewers around the globe,
through its official website. The channel was considered the most popular TV channel in Bangladesh due
to its news and other innovative programs. Ekushey Television (ETV) covered half the country's
population and turned out to be the most popular channel offering quality programs. The most notable
feature of the channel was introducing a new approach to television journalism. The objective and
investigative reports turned its group of young journalists into national stars. The ETV productions were
unique in nature: children's programs Muktokhabor, for instance, was a news-based show in which the
child performers would handle news with social relevance. Fifty percent of the young team were from
underprivileged families. ETV played a vital role in promoting talented young artistes the result of which
was so obvious many innovative ideas and commitment produced quality programs and the channel
gained huge popularity within a short time. ETV was an organized and professional media, which was
accumulated by professional, creative, talented and committed people. To ensure quality the authority
trained up the behind-the-scene people as well as the artistes and performers of a programmed.
III. Literature Review

ETV and NTV are reviewed separately here due to the tremendous differences in the two. In this study
they will be compared against one another to cross analyze the differences and similarities in how they
cover the news and what kind of audience they are targeting.

Why Communication and Sport Matters:

Sports has long been one of the most highly read sections of the newspaper. Television contracts for
sports broadcast rights have now reached into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Sports clearly is an
important part of the culture around the world. Yet, sports research in mass communication has been
largely ignored until the past decade or so. While several reasons for this lack of attention from scholars
have been suggested, the most common complaint is that sports are not ‘‘real news.’’ Sports, in fact, has
been called the toy department of newspapers (Cosell, 1974). Indeed, walk into most newspaper
newsrooms, and you will usually find the sports department hidden in a corner far away from the real
news desk.
The lack of respect for sports
journalism is puzzling. Decades ago,
James Michener
wrote that some of the best journalistic
writing could be found on the sports
pages
(Michener, 1976). Sports journalists,
Michener argued, were more creative
and often
experimented with unconventional
writing styles. Unconventional writing
styles, how-
ever, can sometimes go beyond
appropriateness. For example, a sports
report of the
Texas–Texas A&M football game
shortly after the assassination of
President Kennedy
in 1963 contained several references
to ‘‘sniper fire,’’ ‘‘rifled’’ passes and
death (Aus-
tin American-Statesman, 1963). The
reporter undoubtedly thought these
references
were clever. Even decades later, the
story seems in very poor taste.
Thus, sports reporting is a study in
contrasts: heavily consumed by the
general
public but merely tolerated in
newsrooms and among many scholars.
Added to this
is the fact that sports reporters work
long hours, face hectic schedules, and
draw
constant criticism from the public. It is
no surprise then that Reinardy (2006)
found
a high level of burnout among sports
reporters.
The good news for sports
communication researchers is twofold.
First, because of
the nature and history of sports
reporting, there are many fascinating
unanswered
questions for researchers. Second,
because of the lack of attention from
researchers
in the past, future researchers have
endless new and unexplored areas to
study.

Reporting and Journalists:

One of the most serious problems hampering the development of sports journalism research is the lack of
a specific theoretical framework. There is no ‘‘theory of sports communication.’’ With no broad guiding
theory, conceptual development has taken off along a number of fronts. This has been the case in other
areas of research, such as visual communication.
Researchers focused on communication and sport are often tempted to borrow theories from other
conceptual traditions. This has worked very well in some instances—such as studies dealing with
‘‘celebrities’’ versus ‘‘heroes.’’ However, sometimes, established theoretical approaches may not be
readily applicable to the study of sport communication. For example, cultivation research has found
support for the idea that the more individuals watch television, the more they believe television content is
like the real world, especially in the case of televised violence (see Gerbner, 1998). However, this
cultivation effect is unlikely to emerge among sports viewers. Heavy viewers of sports on television are
not likely to think that the real world is like a sporting event. And while some sports, such as American
football, are highly violent, heavy viewers are not likely to think the world is a scary place because of
football violence. Football violence is not part of a typical person’s world.
While cultivation effects are unlikely, researchers have examined the level of violence in sports content
and its effect on viewers. Raney and Depalma (2006) found that individuals were less likely to report
being in a positive mood after watching violent sports programming than those watching less violent
sports content. This less-positive mood was especially prevalent among females and non-sports fans.
An early study (Bryant, Comisky, & Zillmann, 1981) similarly found highly violent sports content
leading to increased viewing enjoyment. However, this relationship held true only for male subjects.
Enjoyment from sports violence is not limited to football. DeNeui and Sachau (1996) found that
spectators judged college hockey games more enjoyable when the games involved high levels of
aggression, as measure by variables such as the number of penalty minutes.

Thus, research involving viewing

enjoyment, information processing,
and mood
could be fruitful areas for future
research. However, as Raney and
Kinnally (2009)
note, research here is limited. They
call for more research on ‘‘the ways in
which
television viewers perceive sports
action as violent, how perceptions
may differ
across games and how perceptions
might impact enjoyment’’ (p. 311).

Several other areas of research also appear to be ideally suited for communication researchers. The
studies can be broadly described as research that looks at the decision-making processes of sports
coverage and its implications. Some of the more promising areas are considered below. [CITATION Way
\t \l 1033 ]

Hostile Media Effect:

A top the list of promising research areas is the ‘‘hostile media effect.’’ Research here is concerned with
the notion that individuals with strong biases toward an issue believe media coverage is biased against
their side of the issue regardless of reality. In other words, if an individual is a strong supporter of Team
X, they will perceive that coverage in the media will be slanted to Team X’s opponent regardless of the
actual media content. Arpan and Raney (2003) found support for a hostile media effect in sports
coverage. Further, the source of the sports story also mattered—whether the sports story was in the
newspaper of the hometown of a university, in the newspaper of the city of the cross-state rival’s
university, or in a newspaper in a neutral site.
Perhaps, the best example of sports and perceived media bias is the classic study by Hastrof and Cantril
(1954). They showed students at Princeton and Dartmouth, a film strip of a controversial football game
between the two schools. Princeton fans saw many more infractions in the game committed by Dartmouth
players, while Dartmouth fans saw many more infractions by Princeton players. The hostile media effect
provides a logical approach to sports communication research, given the passion that sports fans devote to
their favorite teams. When sports reporters fail to devote the same passion to their teams, fans are quick to
claim a bias. [CITATION Way \l 1033 ]

Agenda Setting and Framing:

Probably the most researched theory in mass communication, agenda setting states that media coverage of
certain issues will increase the perception that those issues are important among members of the public.
Thus, agenda setting is concerned with the transferal of issue salience from media to public. A similar
effect could happen in sports. Fortunato (2008) argues this very point. He believes that changes in the
programming schedule for National Football League (NFL) games was designed to increase topic
salience for certain players and teams, influencing audience viewing that would translate into increased
revenue for the networks and NFL. Thus, when individuals are exposed to the media, the emphasis of key
attributes of a topic increases public perceptions of that topic, which in turn influences product purchases
of consumers.
Denham (1999) found an intermedia agenda-setting influence of sports news on the mainstream press. He
argues that news of Lyle Alzado’s pending death attributed to steroid use impacted subsequent coverage
of anabolic steroid use. The revelations by Alzado of his steroid use while a player in the NFL were so
dramatic that the news media increased coverage in response.
Eagleman (2011) analyzed frames used by SI and ESPN The Magazine in coverage of athletes of
different races and nationalities. She found racial stereotype frames were employed by both magazines. In
other words, the two magazines linked stereotypes, most often negative, to athletes. The concept of
framing, linked closely to the second level of agenda setting, is certainly an area that has strong
implications in sports communication. The attributes linked to athletes influence the ways in which sports
fans view these athletes. [CITATION Way \l 1033 ]

News Gathering Routines
Sports journalists may not go through
the same process of reporting as news
report-
ers. As Tuchman (1972) noted,
reporters have a ‘‘strategic ritual’’
when reporting the
news. They use competing ‘‘truth-
claims’’ from sources to give the
impression that
they are covering all sides of issues
and thus buffer themselves from
criticism
regarding a lack of objectivity.
News Gathering Routines:

Sports journalists may not go through the same process of reporting as news reporters. As Tuchman
(1972) noted, reporters have a ‘‘strategic ritual’’ when reporting the news. They use competing ‘‘truth-
claims’’ from sources to give the impression that they are covering all sides of issues and thus buffer
themselves from criticism regarding a lack of objectivity.
Sports reporters most often have a specific team as their beat and thus can often become friends with the
sources of their information. As Schudson (2001) notes, sports reporters are exempt from the normal rules
of objectivity by openly favoring the local team. ‘‘If a Chicago newspaper were to provide a visiting
basketball team coverage as sympathetic as it provides the hometown Chicago Bulls, the act would be
understood as treachery, as if the Times of London had treated press releases from Hitler’s Germany with
the same deference as those from 10 Downing Street (p. 179).’’
News routines have been studied within sports coverage. Lowes (2004), for example, examined the
disparate amount of coverage between amateur sports and professional sports in North America. He
argues that commercial forces in the news-paper industry led to dominance of professional sports in news
coverage.
Several obstacles exist to effective reporting that are unique to sports. Policinski (1998), for example,
found that a significant number of athletes she interviewed reported dealing with reporters who appeared
uncomfortable with women’s athletic accomplishments. This may in turn affect the amount and quality of
coverage provided by the sports reporters.

The stress felt by sports journalists has

been noted elsewhere. Reinardy

The stress felt by sports journalists has been noted elsewhere. Reinardy (2006) surveyed 236 sports
journalists and found sports journalists suffer a moderate amount of emotional exhaustion and
depersonalization. Younger, less experienced sports journalists working at smaller papers were especially
susceptible to burnout.
Perhaps, the most significant change in the routines of sports reporting recently has been the emergence
of social media. Wigley and Meirick (2008), however, found that sports reporters at civic-minded
newspapers did not use social media more than other newspapers. They speculate that this may be due to
sports reporter sat all newspapers embracing feedback from the public to a high degree.
Wanta and Kunz (1997) looked at how newspaper editors reacted the normal routines of sports reporting
were disrupted. Their survey asked editors how the1994 baseball strike affected their newspapers. Larger
papers were more likely to cut back space devoted to sports than smaller papers due to the lack of
baseball game coverage. Neither large nor small papers reported any changes in advertising.
McCleneghan (1997) also looked at the routines of sports news gathering through a survey of 131 sports
columnists. Respondents stated that 85%of the pressure they face from their jobs is self-imposed.
Columnists also claimed that television has created millionaire athletes who do not care about newspaper
reporters. The best ideas for columns come from intuitive feelings or sporting events, and the worst ideas
come from sports agents or talk shows.

Finally, the relationships between athletes and sports journalists offer another stream of research in news
routines. Athletes and reporters often come into conflict, as was the case with Mark McGwire after the
Congressional hearing on steroid use in baseball. McGuire, McKinnon, and Wanta (2012) examined
strategies used by McGwire to improve his image following the hearings. While, in this instance it was
concluded that his image restoration strategies failed, other studies of athlete–reporter relationships can
help better inform understanding of the fallen sport hero’s chances of redemption [CITATION Way \l

Comparative Analysis:
After going through both channels for a week I am come to understand some key differences between the
two channels first of all both channels focus on different sports mostly with ETV mainly focusing on
cricket and NTV focusing more on football, I also noticed that NTV goes into more detail in their sports
segments than ETV who just go over the basics and don’t give that much context. NTV also covers other
sports like Tennis & Martial Arts whereas ETV doesn’t do that unless it’s a big scoop. So we have
learned that both channels follow the news gathering routine that we have discussed in the Literature
Review. I have also observed that NTV falls under Hostile Media Effect (from Literature Review) as they
covered the Neymar racism issue. As for ETV more so falls under Agenda Setting and Framing issue
especially when it comes to covering well liked athletes like MS Dhoni and powerful figures like
Salauddin.

VI. Conclusions

So in conclusion both ETV & NTV while they provide well put together sports segment which are both
informative and easy to understand they fall under the same tropes that many other channels falls under
and its understandable and I am sure they will improve in the future as of right now these issues still need
to be addressed
