Lesson 5 – How to Pray for Physical Healing
If you want to see how to pray for physical healing – look at what Jesus did.
Six ways that Jesus healed people:
1. ___________________________________________________________________ Mt. 4:23; Mk 1:32-34; Mk 1:39
2. ___________________________________________________________________ Mk 9:25; Lu 4:39; Jn 11:1-44
3. ___________________________________________________________________ Mk 1:40-42
4. ___________________________________________________________________ Mt 12:13; Jn 9:1-7
5. ___________________________________________________________________ Mt 4:24
6. ___________________________________________________________________ Mk 5:25-34
What did the early Church do?
o Anointed with oil and prayed for sick – Mk 6:13, Ja 5:14
o Phillip preached and then healed the sick – Acts 8:5-7
o They spoke and gave commands; laid hands on people and those people were
healed and delivered of evil spirits – Acts 3:6, Acts 9:40, Acts 16:18, Acts 19:11,12
Two means to impart healing – Speaking (Praying) & Laying on of Hands
1. Speaking or Praying to impart Healing
o First - Must know that it is God’s will to want healing for everyone just as God
wants everyone saved.
o Types of Prayer
Prayer of ___________________________________________________________________
Arise, take up your bed and go to your house – Matthew 9:2-6
Stretch out your hand – Matthew 12:10-13
Little girl, arise – Luke 8:49-55
Prayer of __________________________________________________________________
Be quite and come out of him – Mark 1:23-26
Come out of the man, unclean spirit – Mark 5:1-8
Prayer of __________________________________________________________________
Matthew 7:7-11
Luke 11:9-13
Be specific – what do you want God to do?
Prayer for ____________________________________________ – next weeks lesson
o Our tone of voice – the life that is in our voice -- should instill confidence and
hope
2. Laying on of Hands to impart Healing
o Early teaching and training of the Church – Hebrews 6:1-2
o Bible teaches that Hand was:
Symbol of _________________ and ________________, especially the right hand
Used to _____________________
o Laying on of Hands – five things shown in Scriptures:
Physical healing took place – miracles, signs and wonders
Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Blessing given or pronounced upon someone
Ordination – setting people apart for God’s work of ministry
Impartation of a Gift
o Counterfeit usage – Reiki or Therapeutic Touch
o How do we do it?
Israel placed his hands on grandson’s head – Genesis 48
Jesus took girl by hand – Matthew 9:25
Jesus touched the leper – Matthew 8:3
Is there a set pattern – No -- but Scripture does seem to indicate that the
placing of your hand or hands on the head of someone is the proper
method
o Should everyone lay hands on a person at once?
Scripture shows both:
I Tim 4:14 – “. . . hands of the eldership.”
II Tim 1:6 – “. . . stir up gift of God . . . laying on of my hands.”
For Ordination and commissioning – many people involved – thus their
hands (plural) laid on the person
For Baptism in Holy Spirit, imparting a blessing or healing – appears that
only one person laid hands (singular) on the person receiving
Personal experiences
Handout - Do’s and Don’ts when praying for someone

Healing DO’s and DON’Ts
Use this list as a general guideline but not as a list of commandments. This list is based on Scripture, the
authentic doctrine of the Church, and the greatest of all the charisms, common sense. Consequently, it should
form part of the subconscious background for your prayer. However, I must admit from time to time, I have
changed these guidelines especially those that fall into the common sense category, and I’m sure I will need to
do so again. It would not surprise me if they even need modification by the time we finish this seminar and you
have shared your own experience of healing, this wonderful gift of the Lord to his Church. ---- Louis P. Rogge, O.
