Welcome to the General Mathematics–Grade 11 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on
Representation of Function!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
This module has the following parts:
Objectives: This will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you
are expected to learn in the module.
Motivation: This part includes an activity that aims to check what you
already know about the lesson to take. It also includes a brief
drill or review to help you link the current lesson with the

At the end of this lesson, the students must be able to:
1. define a mathematical function;
2. determine relations that are not functions; and
3. determine if a given graph represents a function using the
vertical line test.

1. INSTRUCTION / DELIVERY:
1. What is a relation?
❖ A relation is a set of ordered pairs (x,y).
❖ The domain(x-values) of a relation is the set of first coordinates. The
members of the domain can be called inputs.
❖ The range(y-values) of a relation is the set of second coordinates. The
members of the range can be called outputs.
Illustrative Example
Example 1: Suppose you are working in a fast food company. You earn Php 40 per hour.
Your earnings are related to the number of hours of work.
Questions:
1. How much will you earn if you work 4 hours a day? How about 5 hours? 6 hours?
7 hours? Or 8 hours?
2. Express each as an ordered pair.
3. Based on your answer in item 2, what is the domain? What is the range?
Solutions:
1. The earning depends on the number of hours worked. An amount of Php 160 is
earned for working 4 hours a day, Php 200 for 5 hours, Php 240 for 6 hours, Php
280 for 7 hours and Php 320 in 8 hours.
2. (4, 160), (5, 200), (6, 240), (7, 280), (8, 320)
3. The domain of the relation is {4, 5, 6, 7, 8}. The range of the relation is {160, 200,
240, and 280,320}.
Example 2: The list and the set of ordered pairs below show the same relation. Each
letter is paired with a number.

The domain is {I, L, O, V, E, M, A, T, H} and the range is {4, 5,6, 8, 3, 6, 2, 8, 4}. Note
that for each letter there corresponds exactly one number. This is a special kind of
relation called function.
2. What is a function?
❖ A function is a relation in which each element of the domain
corresponds to exactly one element of the range.

The relation is a function, since each element in domain {I, L, O, V, E, M, A, T, H} is assigned to
one element in the range. Even though the range element 4 is assigned to two elements of the
domain, I and H, it is still a function since each element of the domain is assigned to only one
element of the range.

Relations H and I above are not function. In relation H, the number 2 is assigned to two letters,
C and A. In relation I,3 is assigned to two letters, F and E, and 2 is assigned to two letters, B and
A.
Note: If we are given a set of ordered pairs, we can easily determine whether the relation is a
function or not by simply looking if each first element used only once in the given set. (Ganto
lang yun mga bunso, kapag si domain ay hindi naulit, function yun pero pag naulit si domain
then the given relation is not a function. So ang kailangan nyo lang tingnan ay kung naulit ba
yung domain o hindi. Ganoon lang mag identify if the given relation is a function or not)
3. What is a vertical line test?
❖ The vertical line test is the simplest way of determining whether or not a
graph represents a function.
❖ A graph represents a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the
graph in more than one point.
Thus, y is a function of x.
Thus, y is not a function of x. two values of y corresponds to an x-value.
