Composing experience:
I completed my undergraduate degree in music at the University of Manchester this summer
and am about to start a master’s in composition at the same institution. This has allowed me
to write music not only to fulfil assignments but also for friends and peers to perform in
recitals and in the many new music concerts the university puts on. Outside of university I
have recently written a piece for the St John’s Collective, an amateur orchestra based in
Spinningfields.

I believe the ‘composing for’ scheme would be an amazing opportunity to really improve my
composition. Having been to several Psappha concerts throughout my time as an
undergraduate, I know that this scheme would not only give me access to the expertise of
some brilliant musicians but also insight into a wide variety of genres and musical aesthetics
due to the amount of different music they perform. This depth and breadth of knowledge is
so important to developing as a composer and is something I would love to take advantage
of. This scheme would also give me the opportunity to compose in a professional environment
and develop the more practical skills needed as a composer such as time management,
working to a deadline and communication of ideas. The chance to have my work
professionally recorded and filmed would be another fantastic aide to my development as a
composer, giving me experience of a professional recording process and great opportunity to
share my music and network as a composer.
