October 10. (1823]...Over this plain drove to the fort, where
Lord Amherst has assigned the old Government-house for our
temporary residence...
Then all our new servants were paraded before us under their
tespective names of Chobdars, Sotaburdars, Hurkarus Khansaman,
Abdar, Sherabdar, Khitmutgars, Sirdar Bearer, and Bearers, cum
multis aliis. Of all these, however, the Sircar was the most
conspicuous,—s tall fine looking man, in s white muslin dress,
speaking good English, and the editor of a Bongalee newspaper,
who appeared with a large silken and embroidered purse full of
silver coins, and presented it to us, in order that we might go
through the form of receiving it, and replacing it in his hands...
it was the relic of the ancient Hastern custom of never approach-
ing a superior without a present, ...(i, 25.)
.--My wife and children went by water, and I took our Sircar
with mo in the carriage, Ho is a shrewd fellow, well acquainted
with the country, and possessed of the sort of information which
is likely to interest travellers, His account of the tenure of lands
very closely corresponded with what I had previously heard from
others..(i. 86.)—Narrative of a Journey through the Upper
Provinces of India, from Caleutta to Bombay, 1824-1825. By the
Late Right Rev. Reginald Heber, D. D. (1828.)

The Editor of the Sungbad Coumudy observing an Advertise-
ment, inserted in the Calcutta Journal of the 15th instant, by one
Bhobanee Churn Bunnerjee, asserting that the firat 18 Nos. of the
Coumudy were edited by him, deems it indispensably necessary to
state, for publication, that this declaration is a wicked and
malicious fabrication of falsohood, advanced through sinister
motives; for he was no more than the real Bditor’s Assistant,
and as such he was introduced to the notice of the gentlemen,
under whose immediate and sole patronage and support the
paper has been established.

I take the liberty to recommend Mritoonjoya
Vidyalunkuru who till the present time has been
first Pandit in the Bengalee language, to be the
Sangskrit Pundit, under the new arrangement.
He is one of the best Sangskrit scholars with
whom I am acquainted. Both he and Ram
Nath [Vidyavachaspati, sécond Pundit] have
always afforded me every necessary assistance in
teaching that language, though they derived no
emolument therefrom, Mritoonjoya has uni-
formly conducted himself with the greatest pro-
priety, and is willing to go through any
examination respecting his abilities, and
knowledge of the Sangskrit language which the
College Council may think proper.—Procdgs. of
the College of Fort William, dated 4 Sept. 1805,

Of the first work [The Vedanta Chandrika ;
—an Apology for the present system of Hindu
worship]...., less is known; indeed, very few
appear to have ever heard even of its existence.
As the original production of a native of our own
day, on a very abstruse and metaphysical subject,
it is at once curious and important. It was
published, in 1817, anonymously ; and the follow-
ing are the only scanty particulars which we have
been enabled to glean concerning the author and
his work. His name was Mirtyunjaya Vidya-
Jankara. He was head Pandit of the College of
Fort William; and afterwards Pandit of the
Supreme Court under Sir Francis Macnaghten.
He died, about 1820, at Moorshedabad, on his
return from Benaras; bearing universally the
character of a very learned man in all the
Darsans or systems of Sanskrit learning and
philosophy. He was himself wholly unacquainted
. with the English language. His son, who
succeeded to his station at the Supreme Court,
has beon known to ascribe the credit of havingaided his father with the English translation to
the late Sir W. H. Macnaghten. Of the work
* itself two hundred and fifty copies were originally
struck off ; and there has been no second edition,
‘it ‘has long been difficult if not impossible to
obtain a‘copy ; indeed, we have never seen one
except that which has fallen into our own
possession. (Pp. 44-49.)

Mritoonjuya, formerly Chief Pundit of the
College, some years ago at my suggestion under-
took the abovementioned work, to which he has
given the naine of Prebodha-chundrika, It ig a

sketch of the whole cycle of Hindoo Literature,
illustrated by familiar examples and interspersed
with anecdotes intended to exemplify the different
aciences described therein. He requests some-
thing by way-of reward, or rather’ aa! an
acknowledgment of the sense the Céllege Council
entertains of his labours. The’ work is now in
the Serampore Press apd will be printed without
any application for a subscription. I consider it,
however, a8 a Work which as a class book will be
of great value in the College.
Mritoonjuya discharged the duties of Chief
Pundit of the College from its commencement
till the time. he was removed to the Supreme
Court, ins manner honourable to himself and
satisfactory to me. He translated some work
from the Sunskrit, and composed other from-
other materials which are used in College as class.
books ; for none of these did he ever receive any
reward more than the pay of his office. This his
last request will not therefore, I hope, appear
unreasonable. I think 800 Rupees would be a:
proper testimony of the value of his labours. I
expect the book will sell for about Rs. 8 a copy.
