MANAGING A
Clothing Brand
DISCOVERY
- A successful clothing line won't succeed on the display of its founding designer. As a striving
entrepreneur, I'll think about a cranny in the market that isn't currently being filled. I'll ask myself if the t-
shirt can be worn on formal occasions? Is it a line of hoodies that flatteringly accents someone's curves?
Of course, I'll figure out what product should exist that isn't currently being offered by a major clothing
company to avoid competencies. And before I start building my business as a Fashion Designer and
clothing manufacturer, I'll ask myself "What is my ultimate goal for this product? Do I want to be a brand
name sold I Lazada and Shopee? Do I want to create a private label brand for a company like SM store
and Ayala Malls? Of course, I'll identify my goal and keep it foremost in my mind as I build my brand.
ORGANIZING RESOURCES
- Unless I plan to source, cut, and sew all my materials by myself, I will need a manufacturing partner.
Perhaps, I'll look for a fully humming factory that can produce a limited supply of my boutique goods
alongside mass-produced items from an established brand. Since clothing manufacturing has been based
outside of our country, hence I'll search for a manufacturer that will lead me to a country like China,
United States, Thailand, Japan, or Korea. Some entrepreneurs may want to see the factory in person but as
a striving entrepreneur on a budget, the entire vetting process will have to be done via phone and email.
When It comes to budgeting, I'll identify and understand my target audience. I'll choose a price point that
will cover my production cost but that doesn't alienate the customers.
IMPLEMENTATION
- If my clothing items can be manufactured with reasonable production costs, I'll ready to start planning
my public profile. I'll pick a business name, a logo, and a slogan if necessary. It means designing a
website with an e-commerce platform like Shopee or Lazada. Customers like brands with a compelling
story, so weaving that into my brand name, logo, or website will also help. When I begin the marketing
process, at this point, my new business needs brand awareness. Since Instagram has become a popular
platform for this, this is a good way to promote my business.
REAPING THE RETURNS
- In this step, I'll set realistic sales and distribution goals in a way that I'll partner myself with a business
professional to embark on my business. Just because having a fashion vision doesn't mean that we all
know about clothing distribution. If I can hit my sales goals, I can continue to grow, as per my business
plan. Once I have a proof of concept— clothing that I can sell in limited quantities— I'm ready to loop in
potential business partners and co-investors. Yes, it would be nice to own your business outright and keep
all of your future profits. But as most business owners start to scale up, I need to access capital. Taking on
a business partner who can provide that capital in exchange for a cut of future proceeds is the most
traditional way to do this.
