Gender Equality Challenges in HUMSS Students

This study examined challenges in gender equality as perceived by high school students in Urdaneta City, Philippines. 80 students from grades 11 and 12 studying humanities and social sciences were surveyed using a Likert scale questionnaire. The study found that most respondents agreed that women have better classroom performance and are treated more gently than men, indicating challenges in gender equality are still present according to students.

ABSTRACT

This study attempted to know the Challenges in gender equality as perceived by

HUMSS students of Urdaneta City National High School. With the use of survey

questionnaires as a data gathering tool and Likert scale method as the method used for

collecting data, this study sought to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of

the following: sex, and grade level.

There were 80 selected through random sampling respondents included in this

study. Grade 11 HUMSS strand consist of 6 sections namely: Plato, Socrates,

Confucius, Lao Tzu, Mencius, and Machiavelli. Researchers included 4 boys and 4 girls

from Plato, 4 boys and 4 girls from Socrates, 4 boys and 4 girls from Confucius, 4 boys

and 4 girls from Lao Tzu, 4 boys and 4 girls from Mencius, and 4 boys and 4 girls from

Machiavelli. While, grade 12 HUMSS strand consist of 4 sections which are Aquinas,

Aristotle, Gandhi, and Rousseau. Researchers included 4 boys and 4 girls from

Aquinas, 4 boys and 4 girls from Aristotle, 4 boys and 4 girls from Gandhi, and 4 boys

and 4 girls from Rousseau.

Based from the data evaluated from the survey the researchers presented the

findings in: Challenges on Gender Equality is still not evident to both male and female

according to the perception of HUMSS students of Urdaneta City National High School.

Majority of the respondents agreed that women have better performance in class and

often approached in a soft manner compare to men.
