PROGRAM NOTE
CONDACUM is Latin tor “confluence”.
province of Antwerp, the area called Kontich is home to
Eomposer Jan Van der Roost. Centuries ago Kontich
siretched over a large area, including the confiuen
the Schelde and the Rupel Rivers. Excavations have
uncovered the remains of an ancient oman fort
Conlluence. Historians and phitlogists agree that the
modern word “"Kontich" stems trom the Lait
Feondacum’. This suggests that the Romans gave this
place its name, making Konlich one of the earliest
‘settled communities in the province of Antwerp.
CONDACUM was commissioned for the 25th
Anniversary of the founding of the Arts Council of
Kontich. On this occasion a festival of Youth Orchestras
also called Condacum, was held Jan Van der Roost
