WHAT IS DEFAMATION ?
• Defamation is any statement that damages the
reputation of another individual or party. Laws
governing defamation cases aim to
compensate those whose character has been
damaged due to false or malicious statements.
WHAT IS LIBEL ?
• Libel is a false statement published through writing,
pictures, or cartoons, defaming another individual’s
reputation. Publication of these statements can come
through major media outlets, such as newspapers or
magazines. Libelous statements can also be made
online through social media platforms, review sites,
etc.
WHAT IS SLANDER ?
• Slander is similar to libel, but instead of writing, it is
a spoken false statement. Compared to libel, slander
is considered more temporary, since it is not
published.

• FIRST DEFAMATION CASE AGAINST KEJRIWAL
• First defamation case against Arvind Kejriwal was filed by Pawan Khera –
the then political secretary to Delhi Chief Minister in 2013.
• Sheila Dikshit’s political secretary took Kejriwal to court over his alleged
‘derogatory remarks’ over power tariff hike during protests in October
2012. Pawan Khera accused Arvind Kejriwal of using “false and filthy”
language against Sheila Dikshit in a television show.
• On Pawan Khera’s petition, Karkardooma court issues summons to
Arvind Kejriwal in 2013. Kejriwal had refused to seek bail in this case.

after his image was flashed on TV for a story not related to the judge.
