“You don’t have any weapon, and you knock down your enemy, while at the same time you protect your body,
this method is what we call Jūjutsu. What we call Dakentaijutsu is the capacity to bring the enemy to the edge of
dying. It’s very different. In Dakentaijutsu, the way you strike, the way you perform a technique, you bring him
close to death. This is what Dakentaijutsu is.” (Zoughari, NINJUTSU SCHOLAR DR. KACEM ZOUGHARI - DENSHO
EXPLANATION OF DAKENTAIJUTSU 打拳体術, 2016)
2
“What is interesting here is that with kamae, you never start in kamae. This is because the kamae is the link
between the technique. If you practice the kamae correctly there is no openings.” (Zoughari, Australia 2015 -
Kukishinden-ryū dakentaijutsu, 2015)
3
Sosogu 注ぐ (To concentrate one’s spirit or strength.)
4
Seigan 青眼 here, is a homonym for 正眼 which refers to aiming at the eyes [with a sword]. “One of the ways
that “correct eyes” (seigan; 正眼) is written, is with the kanji for “blue eyes” (Seigan; 青眼). The reason for this is
that poetically speaking, things that are blue in Japanese reflect a certain kind of “truth” (Seigan; 生眼).” (Zoughari,
Australia 2015 - Kukishinden-ryū dakentaijutsu, 2015)
5
In Kacem Zoughari’s photocopies of this section, the five Kamae are followed by a passage that explains that the
“five Kamae to the right (i.e. above in Japanese writing format) do not exist.” That is to say, you wouldn’t simply
stand in the Kamae, but instead, the Kamae are found in the movements of Kukishin-ryū Dakentaijutsu.
6
In the densho it states “Jūdō ni arazu” (柔道に在らず) “It is not rough like Jūdō.” Much of the lexicon of this
ryūha uses terms similar or the same way as what is found in Jūdō, however, it should be noted that it is
performed quite differently.
7
Here it states to hold in this Jūdō-like Kumi Uchi position, but in other copies of the densho it states as a single
lapel grab. It is important to note that when covering the grabbing hand, “So the first thing in Kukishinden-ryū is
that you place your hand over the wrist (See image for Kote Dori), Gyokko-ryū blocks the knuckles, but because of
the armor it means nothing, so in Kukishinden-ryū it’s on the wrist joint.” (Zoughari, Australia 2015 - Kukishinden-
ryū dakentaijutsu, 2015)
8
Kata Erijime 片襟締 in Kukishin-ryū, when grabbing the lapel, one grasps both lapels with the single hand. Thus
by pulling on the sleeve on one side and pushing on the collar on the other side, this causes the collar to tighten.
9
Soto Kaku 外確 a kyusho on the leg, “outside certainty”.
10
Referring to bending the knee.
11
Seoi Nage 背負投 This is not like the jūdō variation, as this would expend too much energy and is not reliable in
armor. Instead, after applying the choke, turn to perform the seoi nage but kneel on the right leg to throw the
enemy; gravity does the work, not muscular tension.
12
“First it’s the distance, we have what would be a one-step distance. If you’re nose to nose with the opponent
and you’re not the first one to strike, this is not a real fight, it’s just two roosters, and when they are like this most
of the time they are scared. They are afraid to strike first; they are waiting for something in order to react. But in
real fighting, you don’t wait for the guy to start, you just go. So when you practice, it takes one step and the
opponent should have you.” (Zoughari, Australia 2015 - Kukishinden-ryū dakentaijutsu, 2015)
13
“The first thing in Kukishinden-ryū is to move away far, and then to go deep in. when he attacks, it’s first Seigan
no kamae, then whit the second attack, you parry the same way but closer. With the second Uke, you catch the
tsuki and take their balance. The first uke is on the bone under the wrist, the second uke is near the elbow near the
ulnar nerve.” (Zoughari, Australia 2015 - Kukishinden-ryū dakentaijutsu, 2015)
14
Yūgasumi 夕霞 “Evening Mist”, refers to a kyusho.
15

“The Uke here is different, not so much a strike as a check. With the second uke, you grab the sleeve, but gently
enough that he doesn`t notice.” (Zoughari, Slovenia '05 Kukishin-ryū & Bōjutsu, 2005)
17
Uchimata Gake (内股掛), throwing an opponent by putting one's leg between their legs. Though this differs
from the Jūdō variation common today, as illustrated in this technique.
18
Ryūmon (Dragon Gate; 龍門), kyūsho right behind the clavicle.
19
Ittai Seoi Nage (一体背負投), translates as a single body carrying throw. The actual execution of this technique,
particularly of Kukishinden-ryū, is taiden.

20
Iso Arashi (磯嵐), can also refer to the mist that comes off of rocks when spraying up and splashing from waves
in a storm.
21
Karaku motsu (軽く持つ), “to hold lightly:”. Here the hand rests very lightly on the opponent’s wrist, barely
making contact as to not draw the enemy’s attention to what is happening.
22
“This lock is called Omote Ura Oni Kudaki (Outside Inside Demon Crush; 表裏鬼砕), because it starts like Omote
Gyaku, and turns into Ura Oni Kudaki.” (inside demon crush; 裏鬼砕). (Zoughari, Slovenia '05 Kukishin-ryū &
Bōjutsu, 2005)
23
Here it says Gedan (lower level; 下段), which some densho use to refer to the groin as a target. However, when
Kacem demonstrated it, the right kick was delivered to the outside of the enemy’s left leg to fold it before entering
for the throw. (Zoughari, Slovenia '05 Kukishin-ryū & Bōjutsu, 2005)
24
Hoshi 星 “Star” a kyūsho.
25

31
Shinkei 神慶 “Celebrate the divine”, a Chinese term (Shén qìng); in this context refers to striking the face.
32
The kanji “taki” (瀧) refers to the Guangdong river, classically called the “Wǔ shuǐ” (Wū river, martial water; 武
水), it is now called Shuāng river (泷). Thus
33
By coming in with the hip, it refers to moving in for a hip throw.
34
Sai 催 “sponsor; hold (a meeting); give (a dinner)”, here it refers to the target on the leg; a series of ligaments
just above the knee on the outside.
35
Hanegoshi 跳腰 “Hip spring”, referring to a certain hip throw. It should be noted that the Jūdō method for
performing this is not the right way, though this kata’s response to the technique will work just the same.
36
Gyaku Osaae Dori 逆押捕 “Reverse Pinning Grab”
37
Here the term Shisei (姿勢) is used. Though the dictionary defines it as
“attitude; posture; stance; approach; carriage (of the body)”, I personally find it notably difficult to settle on a
translation for this term. The first kanji “sugata” (姿) specifically refers to the “figure”, “form” or “shape” and
appearance of something, while the second character “hazumi” (勢) is defined as “[military] forces”, “might”, or
“military strength”, seeming to imply something a bit more ethereal, or giving the impression of strength. This
term is also used in sentences to state one’s “position” on a debate. By my current working definition, this seems
to express psychosomatics; the psycho-physical relationship; Kamae (構), as we usually see in the martial arts.
Thus both the physical position as well as the psychological attitude in that given situation or context.
38
Yaku 厄 “misfortune”, refers to the upper calf on the leg in this context.
39
Oikake Dori 追倒 “Chasing Drop”, here refers to a specific technique by the same name.
40

sections of the ribs as a target.
41
That is to say that the right leg wraps around the enemy’s left leg from the inside, and then you pull forward so
that the enemy falls face up, with a rather surprising amount of force, I might add.
42
Asagasumi 朝霞 as an archaism, this is defined as “morning glow; morning mist (haze)”, in this context it refers
to the Adams apple as a target.
43
Here the term Uke Nagashi (受け流し) is used, usually referring to a sort of sliding deflection movement as
opposed to a blocking movement. For the sake of the translation, I have chosen to apply the term “parry” for this
term, though it may not confer the full flavor of the specific movement. The reason for this is that in fencing, the
term “parry” is defined as ‘A simple defensive action designed to deflect an attack, performed with the forte of the
blade.”
44 Karuku motsu 軽く持つ, means to hold lightly. As Dr. Kacem Zoughari explains, “Here you are responding to a
lapel grab, and as explained above, the hand rests in the underside of the opponent’s wrist, but not strong, very
lightly, karaku (lightly; 軽く), not even a presence.” (Zoughari, SLOVENIA '05 KUKISHIN-RYŪ & BŌJUTSU) and “If
Luke Crocker Kukishinden-ryū Dakentaijutsu CMARA
you apply any pressure to the opponent’s hand, he will feel and understand you, if you smoke, if you drink too
much, that is the reason why the hand should not send any information. Your body is a sensor, but at the same
time a big antenna of information, that sends information. This is why in classical martial arts, especially ninjutsu,
we use the word “Shinshinkanpajutsu” (Science of understanding the mind and body; 身心看破術) which is the
capacity to read someone’s movement through just the contact, just a touch, just by watching the way he
interacts. In other ryūha, we call this Shinpō (心法).” (Zoughari, HAMBURG 11/15 GYOKKO RYU KOPPOJUTSU)
45
Koshi Otoshi 腰落し “Hip Drop”
46
Here you take the arm in Ura Gyaku Dori, the right arm ‘exits’ under the enemy’s extended arm and over top to
behind your own head. Falling back forced your body weight against the enemy’s compromised balance and makes
him fall forward.
47
Gyaku Ura Kote Dori 逆裏小手捕 is basically an Ura Gyaku Dori.
48
Chinken 椿拳 “Camellia fist”
49
Shinseki 神隻 “Divine vessel”
50
Jikyū 自泣 “self-sobbing”
51
Osa Koshi Nage 撥腰投 “rejecting Hip Throw”, an unidentified throw, speculated to be read as “Hatsu Koshi
Nage”, “Hatsuyōtō”, or Hatsuyō Nage”.
52
Koi 声 “sound”
53
Kimon 鬼門 “Demon Gate”
54

60
Shishisuiken 四指捶拳 “Four finger strike fist”
61
Here it says Keri Goshi (hip kick; 蹴腰), which implies that he enemy is coming in to kick the hip, yet the
following step is the usual defense against a hip throw (dropping the hips). This implies that keri goshi here refers
to a hip throw; the translation found in Masaaki Hatsumi’s “Unarmed Fighting Techniques of the Samurai lists
“Hane Goshi (hip spring)” in the kata. (Hatsumi 206)
62
Camellia (Cedrela chinensis; Tree of heaven) a large white flower.
63
May also be read as “Kitsune.”
