Tutorial ADC/DAC
Signals and Electronic Systems
1) A unipolar analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) has a resolution of 16 bits and a reference
voltage of 10 volts. Assuming that the quantisation is done by rounding, find the value of
the binary output codes for the following input voltages: (a) 5.7 V, (b) 5 V + ¼ LSB, (c)
5 V + ¾ LSB.
Answers: (a) 1001000111101100, (b) 1000000000000000, (c) 1000000000000001
2) Do the same as in Question 1, but this time assume that the quantisation is done by
truncation.
Answers: (a) 1001000111101011, (b) 1000000000000000, (c) 1000000000000000
3) A unipolar digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) has a resolution of 16 bits and a reference
voltage of 10 volts. Using at least 10 significant figures, provide the output voltage for the
following digital input codes: (a) 0110100110111011, (b) 1000000000000000, (c)
1111111111111111.
Answers: (a) 4.130096436 V, (b) 5 V, (c) 9.999847412 V
