MASTER IN FAMILY SCIENCE
RATIONALE
This proposed degree in Master of Arts in Family Science is a comprehensive
and well-integrated program specialization in family life and development and family
relations.
Based on numerous studies and testimonial pronouncements by experts and
competent agencies, the problems of individuals are deeply rooted in family dynamics.
These problems are worsened with the continuing disintegration of the family and its
values.
Individuals pass through stages of development and changes in their entire life.
These various transitions require adjustments and realignment among family members.
This realignment often involves modification in attitudes and behavior, which in turn
produce effects on each member of the family and upon the family as a whole.
Pleasant family relationships generally produce higher degree of success in
various fields of endeavors, likewise increasing individual productivity and improving
interpersonal, as well as, interpersonal relationships.
OBJECTIVES
The Master’s degree in Family Science has the following objectives:
1. To expose students to a variety of theoretical perspectives about the family and
development, issues and problems, and encourage the critical analysis of the
same.
2. To provide comprehensive insights on the family as a social institution as each
member attends to one another’s needs and cooperates in constructive give-and-
take relationships.
3. To explore numerous dimensions of family influences on individuals and on
various social agencies.
4. To describe how developmental models of behavior can affect family situations
both in theory and in practice.
5. To provide outreach activities which include, but not limited to, psychological
educational consultation, crisis prevention and intervention, and other holistic
wellness programs
6. To increase the student’s knowledge and skills in dealing with culturally diverse
individual and family needs, including ethnic minorities, stereotype gender
differences, and sexual problems.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
RSHDSG – Research Design
Fundamental of behavioral, social and educational research, types of research,
research designs, components of a research proposal. Course output is a thesis
proposal.

STCMTD – Statistical Methods
Descriptive and Inferential Statistics, parametic and non-parametric tests
commonly used in research and testing of hypotheses.

FNDEDU – Foundations of Education
Social and Philosophical concepts and systems related to education, interactions
and interrelationships between the individual, society and education.

MFSSMDVPY – Seminar in Developmental Psychology
Life span development from prenatal beginning to death. Emphasis is placed on
the interrelationship between physiological and psychological aspects of normal human
development.

MFSFMDVDY – Family Development and Dynamics
Detailed analysis of family needs and structural changes from infancy to
senescent stage.

MFSFMFED – Family Life Education
Focuses on assessment evaluation and crisis intervention of family problems,
spouse abuse, dysfunctional families, etc. It also includes preparing and coping with
family life changes.

MFSFMSCPO – Family and Sociological Policies
Focuses on the child and family in the social environment. It includes social
agencies such as schools, church, government and community. It stresses legal issues
on the new Family Code and Family Policy.

MFSGUCNTC – Guidance and Counseling Techniques
Emphasis on helping relationships, counseling techniques with individuals and
families in a therapeutic setting, particularly marital and family system.

MFSPRACCFL – Ethics and Filipino Values
Examination of moral, social, and cultural content of individual development
including family, community, peers and schools. Special attention is given to
socialization, moral development, attitudes and values of Filipinos.

MFSPRACCFL – Practicum
Intensive training of 150 hours in any recognized social, government or non-
government agency handling therapeutic interventions related to family living.

MFSCHADPY – Child and Adolescent Psychology
Focus is on the growth and development of children and adolescents, as well as
the psychological, social and physical conditions which influence human development.

MFSADVSAS – Advance Studies on Adult and Senescent
Overview of major theoretical approaches research issues and methodologies
and significant research findings, which relate to adult development and aging.

MFSSEMPSK – Seminar on Parenting Skills
Theories, practices and cases related to quality parent-child relationships.

MFSFAMTHR – Family Therapy
Introduction to clinical methods and experiences in counseling individuals, pre-
marital and marital dyads and families. Emphasis is placed on current dysfunctional
interaction patterns and the goals include changing these modes of interaction.

MFSTIFMDV – Trends and Issues in Family Development
Current issues and cross-cultural variations on family life, marriage, birth control,
gender issues, financial management and parenting skills.

MFSHUMSXL – Human Sexuality
Covers physiology, sexual functioning and sexual dysfunctions. Overview of the
theory of sexual development within the Filipino socio-cultural context.

MFSTHESIS – Thesis Writing
Practical application of research designs on relevant issues and concerns about
family life, growth and development.
