Translation Guidelines

1. Process of translation Help Video

a. NPTEL: Sample English transcript will be mailed to be translated along with guidelines to
be followed
b. Translator: The above sample English transcript should be translated and mailed back
within 3 days. This is to help the translator understand the procedure and for NPTEL to
get an idea about the quality of the translation.
c. NPTEL: Quality check (QC) for the sample lecture
d. NPTEL: Once the QC is satisfactory, NPTEL will send:
● Link to a folder containing actual lectures to be translated
● Link to Folder to upload translated file
● translation guidelines will be shared
e. Translator: Translate the English lectures; Share as per process given.
f. NPTEL: Upon receiving the translation, QC will be done and comments will be forwarded
to you by NPTEL
g. Translator : Depending on the QC comments, please do the correction and re-upload
h. Translator has to hand over the following to NPTEL
● Translated Transcript document (Bilingual document and translated monolingual
document) [ upload inside “DOC” folder]
○ Click here for a sample of Bilingual document
○ Click here for a sample of monolingual document
● PDF for each lecture (monolingual document) [upload inside “PDF” folder]
● Index page for Ebook
● MP3 file [ upload inside “MP3” folder]

Disclaimer: All translated content is copyrighted to NPTEL and the translator cannot make any
claim to be the author of this or use it for any commercial purposes.

1.1. Points to be noted in Translated files

a. Check with the English lecture and translate the lecture files into the regional language
in a Google doc.
b. Ensure there are no grammatical and spelling errors, while translating.
c. Insert Math symbols and equations in the correct format.
d. The meaning should be properly conveyed. Language usage : Colloquial/Not formal
e. The technical terms should not be translated. Maintain the technical terms in
transliterated format and mention corresponding English words in parentheses e.g.,
वं डंग (windings) .
f. Include a glossary at the end of the document showing technical words with
transliteration, translation and corresponding English word. (Page No: 16-18)
g. Insert screenshot/slides in the language document from the English file, No need to
translate screenshots
h. Translated material should be delivered as Doc & PDF.
i. Delivery of translated files is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeline.
j. We have shown 2 examples each for all the languages (Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati,
Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu) for your reference. (Page No: 7-15 )
k. After the translation of each lecture Index page has to be created with lecture names
(Page No:19-26)
l. Follow the below specification while uploading the files and also ensure the style which
is maintained in English lectures:
● Font style : Regular,Font size : 12,Format-Align: Justified, Line spacing - 1.15 line
● Lec naming should be followed as - lec1, lec2, lec3 …..
● If lecture name is missing in the English transcript file, translate and keep the
lecture name in each translated lecture
● The title part of each lecture should be bold and center aligned. Given below is
the example in English for your reference. Keep translated title in the below
format
Human Adjustment Process
Prof. Braj Bhushan
Department of Humanities & Social Sciences
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Lecture - 1

NPTEL, IIT Madras

2. Typing & MP3 Recording Procedure

Translation has to be typed using the Google voice typing feature available in the Google Docs.

2.1. Google voice typing

By this method you can use your own voice to type the language content.

a. Open google doc in drive from the ‘After edit folder’

b. In the Google doc opened, name the file as lec1, lec2, lec 3 … according to the lecture
you are going to translate
c. Copy the English content to the Google doc
d. Click on ‘Tools’ in the menu bar
e. Click on voice typing
f. Select the language which you want in the dialogue box appear
g. Read the English sentence
h. Translate the sentence by your mind and speak it out slowly. The google tool will type it
out. Place the equations accordingly in the sentence
i. To type: Click on the dialogue box and start speaking in the language you are
translating. It is preferable to use a headset for the purpose
j. Refer the screenshots below:

4
NPTEL, IIT Madras

2.2. MP3 Recording

The typed out lecture should be read out slowly in a clear voice to generate the audio file of the
same in MP3 format.
Use free software: Audacity (Free software) or any other software available in your mobile or
laptop. Incase if you don't have any, you can use the following
● Download: https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html
● Manual: https://manual.audacityteam.org/

2.2.2 Steps

a. Upon completion of each lecture, Proofread each translated transcript

5
NPTEL, IIT Madras

b. It is not necessary to have a word to word translation from the English transcript. Ensure
that the Grammar is corrected, as well the meaning is conveyed without errors in a
simple sentence.
c. Delete the unwanted sentences.
d. Once the proofreading is completed, read the content in the transcript and record the
audio using headphones.
e. The text “Refer slide time” can be ignored and need not be read out.
f. Each lecture should be named as follows
● lec1.mp3
● lec2.mp3
g. Upload the MP3 file in the folder specified in the mail
h. Quality check at NPTEL

2.4 Submit Google form and resolving QC comments

After uploading each lecture, you have to submit the completion status of the lecture
using the Google form (Link https://forms.gle/GkQr3tnMFfRd4LWX9)

For the first two lectures, please wait for the initial quality check to be done. Once the
QC comments are resolved by you, continue with other lectures.

Please address all the QC comments given by the quality checker in your uploaded
Google doc file.

3. Timelines

So could you please explain us about this Bragg‘s reflector.’ and also the kind of virtual
problem we are looking at taking the physical problem and modelling it on a virtual
environment. So in the first example we are modelling a Bragg‘s reflector. This is nothing but
a dielectric mirror. So dielectric mirror means it reflects incident energy; so whichever wave is
incident in coming, part of it will be reflected and this is required for applications where in we
need our beam to beam switching between some points. So basically what we are doing is we
are staggering slabs of dielectric constants and kind of we are trying to stack them up so light

The linear system response of course is fully known in terms of simple functions like
exponents and sinusoids .We can use our powerful Eigen analysis tools to obtain Eigen
values and Eigen vectors and write down the system response. There is no need to do
integration. But, as I mentioned some time back that we use these two benchmark how our
numerical integration, numerical methods work.

English
So could you please explain us about this Bragg‘s reflector.’ and also the kind of virtual
problem we are looking at taking the physical problem and modelling it on a virtual
environment. So in the first example we are modelling a Bragg‘s reflector. This is nothing but
a dielectric mirror. So dielectric mirror means it reflects incident energy; so whichever wave is
incident in coming, part of it will be reflected and this is required for applications where in we
need our beam to beam switching between some points. So basically what we are doing is we
are staggering slabs of dielectric constants and kind of we are trying to stack them up so light
is going to come and it is going to be reflected.
