INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Technology, today plays a vital role in the lives of people. It is seen as a basis of
growth of an economy. Technology is such a big part of the world, it is used by children
and adults on a daily basis, by way of web surfing, texting, social networking, studies and
in more ways. We are an evolving technological society and in many ways we have
become dependent on its use. Thus, the use of technology and teaching students have to
use it has become a high priority in schools. The students of today are surrounded by
technology, where access to vast collection of information is only a fingertip away. Due
to the large use of technology in the world, the use of technology in teaching and learning
is essential, if we are to make a lasting impact for learning materials on how students
learn. According to Cristen (2009), the use of technology as learning materials will
become an even bigger priority in schools.
Students today live in a very technological world. Most students use some form of
technology on a daily basis including; texting, social networking and etc. Students see
these types of technology as useful and enjoyable. According to a study released by
Educause (2004) technology enriches the the educational experience providing options
that can accommodate students in their quest to learn. These very same students that are
accustomed to these types of technology will relate to using technology as learning
materials. Causing students to be more engaged; thus students often retain more
information. If the students learning environment mirrors the ways in which they engage
in the world, they will excel in their education (Christen, 2009). Costley (2014)
emphasized that as technology rapidly occurring globally, technology is relevant to
students as learning materials. Technology is a powerful contributor to learning if is used
to deepens student’s engagement in meaningful and intellectually authentic curriculum.
Technology is a tool. It should be selected when it is the best tool for students to learn.
The use of appropriate instructional materials is very vital to the learning and/or
educational process. Learning materials, can also have negative flaws as it also presents
numerous impacts on the society and that it also has gaps that can be proven. First
traditional learning materials is outdated or insufficiently covers a topic or subject area.
As it tends to be low level or fact-based. It doesn’t take students’ background knowledge
into account. Second is that traditional learning materials is cost efficient since quality
materials take time to produce and adequate staff time as well as resources needs to be
allocated. As these factors combined, it generates the idea that it is best to have
technology as learning materials rather than simple learning materials since technology
seems to increase student learning capacity.
In order to address this problem, the researchers will conduct a research regarding
the problem. Proving the significant relationship between technology and students’
learning capacity. Thus the researchers aim to come up with results that will identify the
effectiveness of technology as learning materials in students’ learning capacity. An
interview and survey will be conducted by the researchers to acquire data and opinions
from the students.
Statement of the Problem
The main purpose of this study is to prove the effectiveness of using technology
as learning materials in students.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:
1. Which type of learning material is more preferred in terms of convenience?
2. Which type of learning material is more preferred in terms of access to
information?
3. What is the significant percentage of having physical problems like scoliosis
when using printed learning materials?
