Water Volume Change Calculation

The document describes calculating the change in volume of water in a vessel as it is heated from 20°C to 90°C. The initial volume of water is 1 liter. The change in volume is calculated using the coefficients of thermal expansion of water and the Pyrex vessel material, along with the initial and final temperatures. The calculated change in volume is a increase of 1.386 ×10-6 cubic meters.

Given data

The volume of water filled in the vessel is V0 = 1 litre = 100 ×10-6 m3.

The temperature of water initially is Ti = 20oC.

The temperature attained by water finally is Tf = 90oC.

The formula to show the change in volume is,

V  Vw  Vp ......(i)

Where, the increment in volume of water is ΔVw and the increment in volume of Pyrex vessel is ΔVp.

The change in the volume of water is,

Vw  wV0 T

Where, V0 is the volume at initial state, βw is the coefficient of expansion of water which is 207 ×10 -6 K-1
and ΔT is the change in temperature.

The change in volume of Pyrex vessel is,

Vp   pV0 T

Where, βp is the coefficient of expansion of Pyrex which is given as 9 ×10 -6 K-1 .

Substitute the known expressions in equation (i).

V  wV0 T   pV0 T
V  V0 T  w  Bp 
V  V0  Tfi  T   w  Bp 

Substitute values in the equation.

V  100  10 6 m3   90C  273  K   20C  273  K   207  10 6 K -1  9  10 6 K -1 

V  1.386  10 6 m3
Thus, the volume of water that overflows through the vessel is 1.386 ×10 -6 m3.
