IELTS: reading

Basics

60 minutes (30 – for listening and 10 – for checking and transferring)

4 sections= 3 reading passages in the test

Section 1: a conversation between 2-4 people in a social context.

Section 2: a monologue in a social context.

Section 3: a conversation between 2-4 people in an educational or training context.

Section 4: a monologue in an educational or training context.

NO EXTRA TIME FOR TRANSFERRING

The purpose of reading is to answer questions

SKIMMING – building the architecture of the passage = MAP

downloadable worksheets.

The website Using English for Academic Purposes has some excellent guided practice activities using
academic texts.

This free resource from the Open University also has excellent practice activities in skimming, scanning
and close reading for academic texts.
