DC-DC converters are used to convert a fixed DC voltage source into a variable DC voltage. They use electronic switches to interrupt one signal under the control of another. There are different types of DC-DC converters that are classified based on the direction of current and voltage flows, including buck, boost, buck-boost, and Cuk converters. Proper design of inductors and capacitors is needed to maintain continuous current flow.

converter
Introduction

 Like ac transformer
 Converts fixed voltage dc source into variable voltage dc
source

• Uses:
 For traction motor control in electric automobiles
 Trolley cars, marine hoist, forklift trucks and marine
haulers
 Provides smooth ac control, high efficiency and fast
dynamic response
 Dc voltage regulation
 Regenerative braking of dc motors

Choppers

 Chopper is an electronic switch that is used to

interrupt one signal under the control of another

 The converter switch can be implemented by using:

• Power BJTs
• Power MOSFETs
• GTOs
• IGBTs

Step up operation

• A step-up converter with a resistive

load
• When switch S1 is closed
• the current rises through L and
the switch.
• The equivalent circuit during mode

• which is valid for 0 … t … kT. At the

end of mode 1 at t = kT,

Step up operation

When switch S1 is opened, the inductor

current flows through the RL load.

These equations are valid for E … Vs. If E Ú Vs and the converter switch
S1 is opened, the inductor transfers its stored energy through R to the
source and the inductor current is discontinuous.

Frequency Limiting Parameters

The frequency limiting parameters of the step-up and step-down

converters are as follows:
• Ripple current of the inductor, IL;
• Maximum switching frequency, fmax;
• Condition for continuous or discontinuous inductor current;
• Minimum value of inductor to maintain continuous inductor
current;
• Ripple content of the output voltage and output current, also
known as the total harmonic content THD;
• Ripple content of the input current, THD.

Converter Classification

Depending on the directions of current and voltage flows, dc

converters can be classified into five types:
•1st Quadrant converter
• 2nd Quadrant converter
• 1st and 2nd quadrant
• 3rd and 4th quadrant
• Four-quadrant

Summary

• A dc-dc converter can convert a fixed dc

voltage to a variable dc voltage.
• A four-quadrant converter allows power flow
to and from load.
• Switching mode converter can produce output
voltage higher and lower than the input voltage.
• The rectifier fed boost converter is commonly
used for unity power factor correction (UPFC).
