CHERNOBYL: THE NUCLEAR DISASTER OF 1986
The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 is the worst in the history of nuclear power
generation.
The Chernobyl disaster took place in the early daylight hours of April 26,
1986. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant situated in Ukraine, which was a
part of the former Soviet Union, exploded. It is the only accident in the
history of industrial nuclear energy to cause deaths from radiation.
The highly flawed reactor design of the Soviet-era, managed by poorly
trained personnel, resulted in this disaster. The fires released massive
amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. Thirty-one people died within a
few weeks of the misfortune; from the first steam explosion, exposure to
radiation and thermal wounds, and one due to cardiac arrest.
In 2018, UNSCEAR recorded that the accident became liable for almost
20,000 cases of thyroid cancer among people under 18 years of age, at
the time of the accident in the three affected countries; Belarus, Ukraine
and the Russian Federation.
The fields received radioactive iodine. Cows fed on these fields, who then
collected it in their milk which was later consumed by kids.
The agricultural sector was the worst hit by the effects of the Chernobyl
accident. In many forests, wood production had stopped, and large areas of
farmlands were deserted. Besides, many farmers could not sell food items
because they were highly contaminated. Consequently, this adversely
affected the economy.
Higher rates of depression, alcoholism and anxiety over potential health
effects are some of the psycho-social impacts on the citizens and
evacuees.
About 7 million people are entitled to receive special allowances, pensions,
and health care privileges as a result of being classified as in some way
harmed by Chernobyl. Many are unemployed, and some older resettlers
may never adjust.
