YOKO-SHIHO-GATAME (Side Four Quarter Hold)
Kneeling on your partner's side, grab his belt between his legs, as low as
possible under his buttock. With the other hand, grab your partner's neck around
your head and bring that head back by pulling it towards your thigh. In this
position, Uke's right arm must be in the air and blocked by your knee.
So spread your knees as far as possible, one against the opponent's hip,
the other practicing under his shoulder. Make sure your feet are firmly on the
ground.
FIRST ESCAPE
Pivot towards your opponent and take his belt with both hands. Engage
your elbow on the inside of his hip and pulling the pelvis back, bring your knee
in front of him. Continue to group yourself together with your thigh still parallel
to the ground and bring your opponent to the middle of your legs. The
immobilizer is broken. You can then counter attack (see entries).
2
Corollary: If you can't fully extend your leg, take advantage of the
immobilization half-break to squeeze the top of Uke with both of your knees and,
pushing away,
SECOND ESCAPE
When you try to place your knee between you and your partner, your
partner will resist pushing forward. Use this reaction to tip him forward by
pulling him by the belt with one hand and pushing the other under his stomach
with the other. But don't pull it perpendicular to you. Pass it towards your head
for ease.
3
THIRD ESCAPE
You can try to put your right arm back under your opponent's arm and lie
on your stomach.
4
FOURTH ESCAPE
Try to practice Ude-Gatame directly by pushing with your thigh on your
partner's head. As you move it away, place both hands on and behind Uke's
elbow. Perform the technique by pre

Sequences on Yoko-Shiho-Gatame
1. Kami-Shiho-Gatame
Uke tries to put his knee between you
and himself. Let go of the hand holding
the belt and place it flat on the ground in
front of his thigh to prevent him from
continuing this action. Then change the
position of the other hand coming from
the other side of the head, going under
the shoulder to take Uke's belt. You are
in Kami-Shiho-Gatame. If your
opponent bridges, pass your hand from
below and grab your wrists.
2. Keeping the same hand position, you
can reverse the position of the legs to take
the Kesa-Gatame position, either on one
side or the other.
3. If Uke puts his arm under your arm in
an attempt to lie down on his stomach,
catch that arm by letting go of the head
and switch to Jugi-Gatame. If he managed
to get into face down position, glue to him
and passing the legs under him, practice
the Hadaka-Jime strangulation. If he tries
Ude-Gatame, place yourself on the side of
his head by folding the arm and sticking
your head to his chest
