TUTORIAL –FUNCTIONS (LINEAR AND EXPONENTIAL)

1) Determine the equation of the line passing through (4,-1) and with a gradient of 3.

2) Determine the equation of the line passing through the x-axis at x=5 and with a gradient of -3

3) Find the equation of the line passing through the points (-2,1) and (5,6)

4) Dengue infected cases are linear throughout the year. In January the number of cases was 34 and in
May the number swelled up to 56. Find the number of dengue cases expected in November.

5) In 1990 the cost of an average home in the Midwest was $75,000. In 1994, the cost was $87,000.
Assuming that the relationship between time and cost is linear, develop a formula for predicting the cost
of an average home in 2019.

6) The population rate in a village in rural Ba is assumed to be exponential. In 1990 when the first census
was taken the population was 34 000. It is then discovered that the population decreases at a rate of
15% per year. Estimate the population in 2014.

7) The rate of growth of bacteria is assumed to be exponential. Initially there are 150 bacteria and after
2 hours there are 600.
a) How many bacteria are present after 1 hour?
b) How long will it take the number of bacteria to reach 900,000?

8) 500 goats were introduced on Wakaya Island in 1970. A census in 1985 revealed that the population
was 675. Assuming exponential growth,
a) find the estimated goal population in 2010?
b) find the time it must have taken for the goat population to double in size from the initial 500.
