GHS Hazard Classification Overview

The document defines 17 hazard classes according to the GHS Hazard Classification system. The classes include physical hazards like explosives, flammable gases and aerosols, as well as health hazards such as flammable and oxidizing liquids and solids, pyrophoric substances, substances that emit flammable gases in contact with water, and organic peroxides. Each hazard class has a specific definition, with flammable gases defined as gases with a flammable range at normal temperature and pressure, for example.

GHS Hazard Classification

Hazard Type of Definition

Class Hazard

1 Physical Explosive Explosive substance means a solid or liquid (or

Hazard mixture of substances) which is in itself capable by
chemical reaction of producing gas at such a
temperature and pressure and at such a speed as
to cause damage to the surroundings. Pyrotechnic
substances are included even when they do not
evolve gases.

2 Flammable Flammable gas means a gas having a flammable

Gases range with the air at 20 deg celcius and a standard
pressure of 101.3 kPa(kilopascal) (1 bar)

3 Aerosols Aerosols are any gas compressed, liquefied or

dissolved under pressure within a non-refillable
container made of metal, glass or plastic, with or
without a liquid, paste or powder.

4 Oxidizing Gases that cause or contribute to the combustion of

Gases other material more than air does.

5 Gases Under Compressed Gas - A gas which when packaged

Pressure under pressure is entirely gaseous at -50°C,
including all gases with a critical temperature ≤
-50°C

Liquified Gas - A gas which when packaged under

pressure, is partially liquid at temperatures above
-50°C
a) High pressure - -50°C and +65°C
b) Low pressure - +65°C

Refrigerated liquefied gas - A gas which when

packaged is made partially liquid because of its
low temperature.

A gas which when packaged under pressure is

dissolved in a liquid phase solvent.

6 Flammable A flammable liquid means a liquid having a flash

Liquids point of not more than 93°C. It has 4 categories.
Cat 1 - Flashpoint < 23°C and initial boiling point
≤35°C
Cat 2 - Flashpoint < 23°C and initial boiling point
≥35°C
Cat 3 - Flashpoint ≥ 23°C and ≤60°C
Cat 4 - Flashpoint > 60°C and ≤93°C
