Damp Proof Course

This document summarizes methods of damp proofing and waterproofing buildings. It discusses causes of dampness like rain penetration and defective construction. Effects include rotting wood and corrosion. Methods to prevent dampness include damp proof courses, paint treatments, and integral waterproofing. Waterproofing makes structures resistant to water and is used for buildings, pools, and water tanks. Various coating products and procedures are discussed.

Damp-Proof in construction is a type of moisture control
applied to building walls and floors to prevent moisture from
passing into the interior spaces. Dampness problems are
among the most frequent problems encountered in
residences.

Damp proofing  is defined as a material that resists the

passage of water with no hydrostatic pressure
and waterproof as a treatment that resists the passage of
water under pressure. Generally, damp proofing keeps
moisture out of a building where vapour barriers keep interior
moisture from getting into walls.

CAUSES OF DAMPNESS
1. Rain penetration
2. Level of site
3. Drainability of soil
4. Climate condition
5. Defective orientation of building
6. Moisture entrapped during construction
7. Defective construction e.g. joints
8. Use of poor quality bricks which ultimately absorb a lot of
water.
9. Use of Poor quality of concrete (permeable concrete)
EFFECTS OF DAMPNESS
1. Causes rotting of wood
1. Causes corrosion of metallic fixtures.
2. Deteriorate electric installations.
3. Deteriorate carpet & furniture’s.
4. Causes spots on the floors and walls.
5. Causes petting off and removal of plaster.
6. Causes bleaching and blistering of paints.
7. Causes efflorescence in bricks, tiles and stones
8. Dangerous for the health of occupants.
9. Reduces the life of structures
10. Promotes growth of termites
Method of preventing dampness-
- By providing DPC ( Damp proof course )
- By surface treatment i.e. by providing damp proof
paint
- By integral water proofing method
- By special devices i.e. by providing chajjas & by
providing cavity walls etc

Market Survey-
- Asian Paints Damp Proof Chemical- Rs.850/unit(5 Litre)
- Damp Course Cream- Rs-3600/Kg.
Waterproofing is the process of making an object or structure
waterproof or water-resistant so that it remains relatively
unaffected by water or resisting the ingress of water under
specified conditions. Such items may be used in wet
environments or underwater  to specified depths.
Water-resistant and waterproof often refer to penetration of
water in its liquid state and possibly under pressure,
whereas damp proof refers to resistance to humidity or
dampness.

Waterproofing is used in reference to building structures

(such as basements, decks, or wet areas), watercraft, canvas,
clothing (raincoats or waders), electronic devices and paper
packaging (such as cartons for liquids).

Modern items may be waterproofed by applying water-

repellent coatings or by sealing seams with gaskets or o-
rings.

Types Of Waterproofing-

- Brick Bat Waterproofing

- Poly Acrylic Chemical Coating Waterproofing
How To Do Terrace Waterproofing For Terrace Garden-
If we are planning to have a garden on terrace, then we need
to have waterproofing done. Waterproofing can be easily be
done by application of waterproofing polymer coating on
concrete slab.
But this coating is done on concrete. Once a waterproof
polymer coating is done, we can plan for a small garden on
terrace.

How To Waterproof Swimming Pools-

In order to waterproof swimming pools, it is recommended to
use epoxy-cement systems as they create a solid barrier
against counter pressure as well as a resistant layer. Solvent-
free elastic waterproofing resins protect the surface in a great
way, preserving it from the aggressive action of chlorine and
atmospheric agents.

Waterproofing of over head water tank-

Overhead water tanks are often a source of leakage
through the ceiling. The water from these tanks can
enter the slab, beams, columns or brick work of the total
building and damage the structure as a whole. Thus it is
important to prevent such leakage using
comprehensive waterproofing products.
