Experiment No. 2: 1. Objective

This experiment aims to calculate the reactions of an indeterminate portal frame experimentally. The apparatus required includes the portal frame with pin and roller supports, dial gauge, calipers, weights, and a ruler. The procedure involves connecting a load cell to a digital indicator, applying incremental loads to the frame via a load hanger, and recording the horizontal reaction readings from the indicator. This allows the reactions of the statically indeterminate portal frame to be determined experimentally.

EXPERIMENT NO.

1. OBJECTIVE:
TO CALCULATE THE REACTIONS OF INDETERMINATE FRAME
EXPERIMENTALLY.

2. APPARATUS REQUIRED:
Portal frame, Frame supports: Pin and Roller, Dial gauge, Venire Caliper, 1
set of weights, Steel ruler.

3. THEORY:
Fame is a structure element composed of beams and column connected by
rigid joints. The angle between the beam and column is usually 90 degree.
Frames can be divided into two categories: braced and unbarred. A braced
frame is one in which the joint at each level are free to rotate but are
prevented from moving laterally by attachment to a rigid element that can
supply lateral restrain to the frame. An unbarred frame is one in which
lateral resistance to displacement is supplied by the flexural stiffness of the
beam and column.

A structure is termed as statically indeterminate, if it cannot be analyzed

from principles of statics alone, i.e.  . Example
of indeterminant frame are: portals, multistoried frames, etc.

A portal frame is composed of members in a single plane. Loading is applied

to the members, resulting in internal shear and moment as well as axial force
in the members. A portal frame can be considered as statically determinate
when the degree of indeterminacy is equal to zero and the reactions at the
support can be determined using equations of static only.

4. PROCEDURE:
i. The load cell is connected to the digital indicator.
ii. Switch on the indicator. For stability of the reading the indicator must
be switch on 10 minutes before taking readings.
iii. Place a load hanger at the load is to be applied.
iv. Note the indicator reading. If it is not zero press the tare button.
v. A load is placed on the load hanger.
vi. The indicator reading is recorded. This represent the horizontal
reaction of the pinned support.
vii. The load is increased on the load hanger and the horizontal reaction is
recorded.
viii. Step 7 is repeated for another 4 load increments.
ix. The result is tabulated.
5. CONCLUSION:
In this way the reaction of indeterminant frame can be calculated in lab.
