Concrete Reinforcement Guide and Standards

This document discusses reinforcement in concrete. It notes that concrete is weak in tension and must be reinforced with steel bars to increase its tensile capacity. It then provides details on the diameters and weights of common reinforcing bar sizes. It emphasizes the importance of cover and development lengths to protect reinforcement from corrosion and ensure durability. Finally, it outlines reinforcement requirements and considerations for various concrete elements like beams, slabs, columns, and footings according to Indian codes and standards.

REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE

NEED FOR REINFORCEMENT

Concrete is weak in tension
Reinforced with steel to increase the tensile capacity
Failure of concrete without rebar is brittle without any warning

Dia of the Reinforcing Bars Available

• 8 mm - 0.395 Kg / RMT
• 10 mm - 0.617 Kg /RMT
• 12 mm - 0.888 Kg / RMT
• 16 mm - 1.579 Kg / RMT
• 20 mm - 2.467 Kg / RMT
• 25 mm - 3.854 Kg / RMT
• 28 mm - 4.835 Kg / RMT
• 32 mm - 6.315 Kg / RMT
• 40mm – 9.876 Kg / RMT

GENERAL DO’S AND DON’T’S

• Protection from natural elements to prevent corrosion
• Strict adherence to structural drawings
• Any deviations to be intimated to engineer at site
• Cover, shape and size of rebar, spacing, hooks, bends and laps – as per drawing and
standard practice per code
IMPORTANCE OF COVER TO REBAR
• Protection from corrosion and ensuring of durability
• Fire resistance of RCC elements
• Minimum cover as per IS 456:2000
1. Slabs and Beams: depending on exposure conditions
2. Columns – 40mm
3. Footings – 50mm

Development Length
• Calculated as per IS 456:2000
• Development length in tension and compression are different
• Generally expressed as function of diameter on the structural drawing

CODES AND STANDARDS

• IS 456:2000, PLAIN AND REINFORCED CONCRETE CODE OF PRACTICE
• SP 34, HANDBOOK ON CONCRETE REINFORCEMENT AND DETAIIING
• IS : 5525-1969 Recommendations for detailing of reinforcement in reinforced
concrete works.
• IS 962 , Code of practice for architectural and buildings
• IS 13920, DUCTILE DETAILING OF REINFORCEDCONCRETE STRUCTURES
SUBJECTED TO SEISMIC FORCES

BEAM REINFORCEMENT
• LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT
• SHEAR REINFORCEMENT OR STIRRUPS
• BENT UP BARS
• SIDE FACE REINFORCEMENT
• PIN BARS
SLAB REINFORCEMENT
• Dia and spacing of reinforcement
• Curtailment and cranking of bars
• One way and two way slabs
• Special slab systems

COLUMN REINFORCEMENT
• Longitudinal bars and lateral ties
• Configuration and spacing of lateral ties
• Splicing of bars

FOOTING REINFORCEMENT
• Types of footing and their rebar
• Cover for rebar and development requirements for column bars

BAR BENDING SCHEDULE

Purpose of preparing BBS
• To provide cut-lengths for the process of cutting and bending of bars
• To calculate the quantity of steel required
• To maintain a track record of steel consumption in a project
