GETTING TO KNOW YOUR BRUSHES
BRUSH GROUPS
The Rusty Nib brush set contains over 130 brushes so
to keep things organized we’ve arranged them into
separate folders according to their brush style:
You’ll find a huge range of brush styles,
textures, angles and poses to choose from.
Exploration and experimentation is encouraged!
In many cases brushes that appear similar at
first glance will feel completely different
based on your pen pressure settings, inking
style and even which hand you draw with.

CUSTOMIZING YOUR BRUSHES
CHANGING THE SCALE OF A
BRUSHES EMBEDDED TEXTURE
Many of your Rusty Nib brushes use embedded 2
patterns to create textured stroke effects. To adjust the 1
scale of a brushes texture, follow the steps below.
1 Go to the Brush Settings Panel (Window > Brush Settings).
2 Go to the Texture tab and use the Scale slider to
increase or decrease the texture size.
NOTE: Texture scales over 100% may affect the usability of
the brush or reduce the quality of the texture effect.
BRUSH STROKE SMOOTHING
Had one too many coffee’s or got a case of the deadline jitters?
Create super smooth linework using the Brush Smoothing settings
to iron out those unwanted shakes and trembles in your linework.
Smoothing is set to 0% by default for most brushes.
The higher the smoothing % the smoother your stroke will appear.
NOTE: Smoothing works best for long brush strokes where small hand movements and
jitters are more obvious and will generally make shorter or more expressive
strokes more difficult to make. If experiencing “brush lag” when using brush
smoothing reset smoothing to 0% or re-select the brush in the brushes panel to
reset it to the default setting.
SAVING A COPY OF A
CUSTOMIZED BRUSH
Any fine-tuning made to your brushes will be lost when
you select a new brush. To save a brush with your
custom settings take the following steps. 2
1 Go to the Brush Settings Panel (Window > Brush
Settings). Your customized brush will be highlighted
in orange to indicate that changes have been made
to its default settings.
2 Click the ‘Create New Brush’ button at the bottom of
2
the Brush Settings Panel.
3 Check the “Include Tool Settings”
checkbox and give your custom brush a
recognizable name then click OK to save.
4 Your saved brush will appear in the Brushes panel
directly below the original and will be highlighted
in blue to indicate that the brush settings have
been saved permanently to the brush.
