Symmetry Field Exercise Guide

The document describes a graded field exercise on plane symmetry. It instructs students to analyze 3 different objects with different plane symmetry groups, excluding certain common groups. For each object, they must correctly draw the unit cell position, identify all symmetry operators, and superimpose the symmetry diagram with operators. A total of 9 marks are possible for fully correctly completing all 3 analyses. Examples are then given of analyzing a container, paving, and floor tile, identifying their symmetry groups and operators.

Note:
• You must choose objects with THREE DIFFERENT PLANE GROUPS that are NOT c2mm (No . 9), p4mm (No. 11) or
x
p6mm (No. 17) as these were demonstrated in the model answer.
• Zero marks will be given for a second object from the same plane group.
• Download and print the 17 plane group diagrams to complete this Field Exercise from Core Study Resources.
