wide-angle sensor using Nonacell technology which
groups 3x3 pixels to capture more light.[24]
The front camera is able to record video footage at 2160p.[25]
A new camera mode was introduced called Single Take, which allows users to
capture photos or videos at the same time with different sensors automatically.[15] All
three models can also record 8K videos at 24fps with a bit rate of 80 Mbps[25], which
will consume about 600MB of storage per minute.[26] On the S20 and S20+, this is
enabled by the 64 MP telephoto sensor, whereas the S20 Ultra's 108 MP wide sensor
natively supports 8K video.
Software
All three phones run on Android 10 and Samsung's custom skin One UI 2.1.
Reception
The Galaxy S20 lineup was received positively overall at launch.
Reviewing the S20 and S20+, The Verge gave it an 8.5/10 and stated "it’s the best
complete package of an Android phone available right now and a high bar for the
rest of 2020 Android phones to try to clear";[27] CNET gave the S20 an 8.7/10 and
called it "premium, pocketable and packed with all the features you need to level up
your photography and power you through the day.[28]
The S20 Ultra received generally positive reviews, with a 7/10 from The Verge,[29] an
8/10 from Wired[30] and CNET,[31] and a 3.5/5 from Digital Trends.[32] Praise was
directed towards the display and battery life, but it was criticized for being too
expensive, unwieldy to use and having inconsistent camera quality. Critics were split
on 8K video and 5G, additionally noting that the camera quality was poor at 100x
zoom. Jessica Dolcourt of CNET remarked that "excellent camera features aren't
quite enough to overcome an awkward design, questionable battery performance
and a sky-high price", while Julian Chokkattu of Wired concluded that "its large size,
some camera snags, and an absurd price tag stand in the way of Samsung's phone
from reaching excellence" and Corey Gaskin of Digital Trends thought that in its
current state, it's hard to justify spending $1,400 on a camera-centric device, which
simply isn't the best smartphone camera you can buy".
The S20 Ultra received an overall score of 122 from DXOMARK, with a photo score
of 132 and video score of 102, the sixth-highest ranking as of May 2020 shared with
the Honor V30 Pro.[33] The S20+ scored four points lower with an overall score of
118, a photo score of 127 and a video score of 100.[34]
Known issues
Even before the general release, reviewers have seen autofocus and skin smoothing
issues with the cameras, especially with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Samsung is working
on a fix,[35][36] but the Exynos model continues to have autofocus issues after an
update that was supposed to fix them.[37]
Users are reporting that the Snapdragon version has GPS lock issues.[38]
Users are reporting that Exynos model has heating issues.[37]
The latest update to the Exynos has introduced a green display tint issue.[39]
Users are reporting that the camera glass cracks spontaneously.[40][41]
Notes
a. Users can choose to run the device at either 60 Hz or 120 Hz with 60 Hz mode
being the default option, however 120 Hz mode only supports FHD+ resolution[19]
b. The camera's optical zoom factor is actually 1.07x, and uses cropping and
processing algorithms to achieve the claimed 3x factor[23]
