Black Hand Gang and the Archduke's Assassination

The heir to the Austria-Hungary throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian nationalist group Black Hand. This caused tensions between Austria-Hungary and Serbia to rise, as the Archduke was killed while inspecting Austria-Hungary's rule over Bosnia. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in response, their ally Germany backed them. Meanwhile Serbia's ally Russia mobilized forces to help Serbia, causing Germany to declare war on Russia, and France to join Russia. As countries took sides and honored existing alliances, the assassination ultimately led major European powers into World War 1.
