Clinical orthodontics for advanced practitioner :
Special lecture and hands on course for Vietnamese dentists

This special coursework is designed for the dentists who already have mastered the
basic course of orthodontic treatment, so that who have the skill to diagnose, establish
treatment plan, and perform the orthodontic treatment of the simple malocclusions.
The aim of this coursework is to provide the participants the advanced, and specialize
knowledges and skills of the current orthodontic treatment.
This course work is also expected to do it’s role as a continuous dental education
program for the orthodontic specialists.
The course includes an introduction of the newest topics in field of orthodontics,
various approaches to correct complex skeletal problems, and some lectures about the
biomechanics of orthodontic tooth movement.
‘Clinical orthodontics for advanced practitioner ; Special lecture and hands on course
for Vietnamese dentists’ is an 8 days course work that consists of two components, 'the
lectures and the hands on'.
GOALS OF THE COURSE WORK
At the end of this course work, the participants are expected to;
- Understand component of skeletal malocclusions
- Have ability to apply orthopedic appliances in growing patients
- Have a knowledge of current topics in orthodontic fields
- Be able to use temporary anchorage device in their clinics
- Acquire the knowledge of biomechanics for various force application
- Have a knowledge of iatrogenic damages during orthodontic treatment
- Understand the role of orthodontists in orthognathic surgery

OBJECTIVES OF COURSEWORK
Upon successful completion of the course work the participants will be able to ;
• Understand the component of skeletal class II malocclusion and establish proper
treatment plan accordingly
• Understand growth modification of skeletal class II patient
• Understand the component of skeletal class III malocclusion and, establish proper
treatment plan accordingly
• Diagnose functional class III children, and establish proper treatment plan
• Diagnose skeletal transverse discrepancy
• Establish proper treatment plan for transverse discrepancy in growing patient
• Understand the considering factors for TMD patients during orthodontic treatment
• Acquire proper knowledge of TAD and use TAD in participant’s clinic
• Understand the cause and solution of iatrogenic damages during orthodontic treatment
• Understand the theory of biomechanics in various tooth movements
COURSE CURRICULUM
The course curriculum will have two components; lecture and Hands on. Every lecture
will be addressed in English, and will be translated into Vietnamese.
Basically, this coursework is 8 days course work. The lecture will be held from 09:00 AM
to 04:30 PM and there is to be a lunch break. But, situationally there might be some
adjustment in lecture schedule with the consents of participants.

Necessary material list will be sent to registered participants in advance by email, and if
there might be any questions about the necessary materials for hands on course, please
contact Ms. Thao for help.
Lecture material will be distributed at the course work.
CONTENTS
Module 1 ; Treatment Strategies of skeletal class II Malocclusion
Objective
This module is intended to provide the knowledge of diagnostic criteria of skeletal class
II malocclusion and ability for proper treatment planning in skeletal class II patient.
Synopsis
• Various technique of growth modification in skeletal class II patient
• Assessment of optimal treatment timing
• Orthodontic camouflage of skeletal class II problems in growing patient
• Orthodontic camouflage of skeletal class II problems in non-growing patient
Hands on
• Case analysis of skeletal class II problems ; participants will analyse the given cases
with his/her own basic knowledge of cephalometric analysis, clinical analysis and model
analysis.
• TPA fabrication in typodont
• Face bow adaptation in typodont
Module 2 ; Treatment Strategies of skeletal class III Malocclusion
Objective
This module is intended to provide the knowledge of diagnostic criteria of skeletal class
II malocclusion and ability of proper treatment planning in skeletal class III patient.
Synopsis
• Treatment of anterior crossbite in preadolescent children
• Treatment strategies of skeletal class III in non growing patients
Hands on
• Differential diagnosis of skeletal CIII & pseudo CIII with given cases
• Adjustment of various functional appliance for growing CIII patient
• Adjustment of face mask (if possible)
Module 3 ; Transverse Problem : Maxillary Expansion Revisited
Objective
This module is intended to provide the knowledge of diagnostic criteria of skeletal
transverse discrepancy and ability of proper treatment planning for the patient with
skeletal transverse discrepancy
Synopsis
• Treatment of transverse discrepancies in preadolescent patients
• Rapid expansion vs Slow expansion
• Skeletal anchorage assisted maxillary expansion
Hands on
• Adjust Various Expansion Devices in Typodont
Module 4 ; Clinical Application of Temporary Anchorage Devices
Objective
This module is intended to provide the knowledge of basic principles of Skeletal
Anchorage in Orthodontics
Synopsis
• Types of skeletal anchorage devices,
• Indications and insertion areas of TAD
• Potential complications of TAD
• Clinical Applications of various Skeletal Anchorage devices
Hands on
• Implantation of simple screw in typodont
• Implantation of simple screw in animal bone ( if possible )
Module 5 ; Orthodontic Treatment of Patient with TMJ Problem
Objective
This module is intended to provide the knowledge of how to handle TMD problems in
orthodontic patients.
Synopsis
• The importance of TMD in orthodontics
• Diagnostic criteria of TMD
• The management of TMD during orthodontic treatment
Hands on
• Clinical examination of Temporomandibular joint ; inspect each other among the
participant in clinic according to TMD charts, if possible
Module 6 ; Biomechanics in Orthodontics
Objective
This module is intended to provide information about the basic concept of
biomechanics in orthodontics
Synopsis
• Various mode of tooth movement
• Understand the various terms of biomechanics
• Biomechanical consideration of tooth movement in extraction case
• Biomechanical consideration of periodontally compromised patient
Hands on
• Fabricate intrusion arch in typodont and understand its mechanics
• Activate TPA for various situation (rotation control, and so on)
Module 7 ; The Iatrogenic effects of Orthodontic Treatment
Objective
This module is intended to provide the knowledge of the cause and the mechanism of
the various iatrogenic effects during the orthodontic treatment.
Synopsis
• Etiologies of External Root Resorption during orthodontic treatment
• Etiologies of White spot during orthodontic treatment
• Side effect on the Periodontium
• Side effect on the Pulp
• Adverse effects on dentofacial appearance
Module 8 ; Surgical Orthodontics
Objective
This module is intended to provide the general information of orthognathic surgery
diagnostic criteria of the orthognathic surgery patients.
Synopsis
• Diagnosis of Facial Disharmony
• Presurgical orthodontic Treatment
• Surgical Procedure
• Postsurgical Orthodontic Treatment

The content of hands on could be changed by the condition of laboratory room, The
changes will be notified to the participants before the beginning coursework, and the
alternatives would be made with the agreements of the participants.
