GE9 – The Life and Works of Rizal

Assignment 1

Name: Garcia, Arlene Joy S. Schedule: 5:30-7:30 pm

Instruction. Answer the following questions clearly and concisely.

1. What are the arguments in favor and against Rizal Law or R.A. 1425, considering the context of
the 1950s?
-Rizal Law or Republic Act no. 1425 talks about the obligation of all schools in the
Philippines to teach the life and works of the national hero, Jose Rizal. To remind the
Filipinos all the sacrifices of our heroes in the fight for our freedom. By this Law, it brings
a greater sense of nationalism and idealism to the youth. Senator Claro Recto and
Senator Jose Laurel, the proponents of the bill, argued that the main objective of the bill
is to keep memory of the national hero alive and not to go against religion. The main
opponent of this is the Catholic Church in which according to them, Rizal’s novels
humiliated the Catholic dogmas. Another argument is that, the Catholic schools
threatened to stop its operations if the bill was passed and punished Recto in the future
elections but Recto remained persevered. Lastly, the suggestion to use the expurgated
version of Rizal’s novels as mandatory readings but Recto explained that using of
expurgate version would destroy the memory of the national hero.

2. Would similar arguments still force today? Defend your answer.

-The arguments discussed would still force today because the life and works of Rizal are
still thought in all private and public schools. The curriculum still uses the original or
unexpurgated versions of Rizal’s novels especially the English translation is still used as
basic texts. Even though, this is an issue about the Catholic religion, there’s nothing they
can do about it because it is already a law.
