mial equation?

(i) x2 − 3x + 7 = 0

(ii) x3 − 3x2 + 4x − 1 = 0

(iii) 2x + 4 = 0

(iv) y + xy = 5
y
(v) 2x − x
+7=0

(b) In a certain schools the first admission coast for 12 children and 3 adults is equal to
162 Tsh, and the second school admission coast for 8 children and 3 adults equal to
122 Tsh.
Carry out the plan and solve the problem.

(i) Use elimination method

(ii) Use substitution method

(c) Use the graphical method to find the value of x and y.

2x − y = 4
3x − 4y = 10

QUESTION 2

(a) Solve the following system of equation.

(i) x2 + 2x = 15 by factoring
(ii) 2x2 − 14x − 13 = 0 using the quadratic general formula

(iii) x2 + 4x − 13 = 0 by completing the square

(b) Solve the following equation

5 10−y
(a) 2y−6
= y 2 −6y+6

(b) 3(x + 5) = 2(−6 − x) − 2x

(c) Equation relating quantities demand (x) and price per unit (y) is given by
y = 600x + 5000
(i) Find the price per unity if quantities demanded are 3500 units
(ii) Find quantities demanded if price per unit is Tshs.40/=

(d) For which value(s) of the constant k does the system

x−y =3
2x − 2y = k
Have (a) no solutions? (b) Exactly one solution? (c) Infinitely many solutions?

QUESTION 3

(a) A tailor has 16 square meters of cotton cloth and 11 square meters of silk cloth. A
boy’s suit requires 2 squares meters of cotton cloth and 1 square meter of silk cloth.
A girl’s garment requires 1 square of cotton cloth and 2 squires meters of silk cloth.
If a boy’s suit sell at 3000/= while a girl’s garment sells at 2000/=. A tailor wishes
to obtain the maximum money.
Formulate the programming model

(b) A dietician wishes to mix two types of foods in such a way that vitamin contents of
the mixture contain atleast 8 units of vitamin A and 10 units of vitamin C. Food ‘I’
contains 2 units/kg of vitamin A and 1 unit/kg of vitamin C. Food ‘II’ contains 1
unit/kg of vitamin A and 2 units/kg of vitamin C. It costs Rs 50 per kg to purchase
Food ‘I’ and Rs 70 per kg to purchase Food ‘II’. Formulate this problem as a linear
programming problem to minimise the cost of such a mixtur
