Grade 12 Physical Science Lesson Plan

This document contains a lesson plan for teaching about polar and nonpolar molecules to grade 12 students. The plan has three parts: preparatory activities to review concepts and motivate students; a developmental activity where students group common household molecules as polar or nonpolar; and an evaluation with multiple choice questions. Students will identify polarity based on properties like solubility, melting point, and boiling point. They will learn how molecular attractions relate to observable characteristics. The lesson aims to help students understand how a molecule's structure and polarity determine its physical properties.

I. Objectives
A.    Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of how the uses of different
materials are related to their properties and structures.
B.      Performance Standard:
C.    Learning Competencies: The learners relate the polarity of a molecule to its properties
D.     Competency Code : S11/12PS-IIIc-16
II. Subject Matter
A.    Content : Polar and Nonpolar Molecules
B.      References:  K12 Basic Education Curriculum  Senior High School
Curriculum Guide
 Teaching Guide for Senior High school Physical Science by
CHED in collaboration with Philippine Normal university
 Physical Science by Helen E. Caintic, Ph.D.
C.    Materials: PowerPoint presentation, laptop, television, chalk, board, picture,
water, oil, juice, cup as containers
D.
III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Review Last meeting we’ve discussed about polar and nonpolar molecules.
Ask:
 What is polar?
 What is nonpolar?
 How can you identify the polarity of the molecule base on its
structure?
 How can you identify the polarity of the molecule base on its
electronegativity?
2. Motivation ASK:
 Why is sugar soluble in water?
 Which temperature does coffee dissolves faster, hot water or cold
water?
 Which melts faster, polar or nonpolar?
B. Developmental Activities
Direction:
1. Activity  Group the class into 5 groups.
 List down molecules you usually see at home or in school.
 Using the molecules you see around you every day identify
whether it is polar or nonpolar.
 Identify its solubility, melting point and boiling point.
Ask:
2. Analysis  How was the activity?
 What did you observe?
 How can you determine polar and nonpolar molecules based on its
solubility, melting point and boiling point?
 Let’s check if you answers are correct.
3. Abstraction   The teacher will further discuss on the properties of a molecules
as a basis on identifying its polarity.
ASK:
 How do you relate the strength of attraction between the
molecules to their observable properties?
 What is solubility?
 What is melting point?
 What is boiling point?
 How can you determine the polarity of a substance base
on its properties?

DIRECTION:
4. Application  The teacher will a choose a student randomly and she will flash a
molecule with its melting point, boiling point and solubility
(either of the 3)
 The students will identify whether it is polar or nonpolar.
Direction: Multiple Choice. Write only the letter of your answer.
IV. Evaluation
1. Temperature at which a solid turns into liquid.
a. Melting point b. Boiling point
2. Refers to the ability of a solute to dissolve in a certain amount of
solvent.
a. Viscosity b. Solubility
3. Which of the following is insoluble in water?
a. Sugar c. Oil
4. Which of the following refers to the temperature at which a
liquid turns into a gas?
a. Melting point b. Boiling point
5.It needs greater amount of heat needed to break the forces of
attraction.
a. Polar c. Non polar

V. Assignment Study on intermolecular forces.

VI. Remarks Not yet executed because of the mass
