GENERAL DIRECTIONS: READ AND UNDERSTAND CAREFULLY EACH
INSTRUCTION. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS NEATLY AND
COMPLETELY. AVOID ERASURES. ANY FORM OF CHEATING IS STRICTLY
PROHIBITED. DO IT HONESTLY AND RELIGIOUSLY. IF THERE ARE
QUESTIONS, APPROACH YOUR INSTRUCTOR GENTLY. YOU ARE GIVEN AN
HOUR TO DO IT. GOD BLESS!
I. TRUE OR FALSE. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE
otherwise. Justify each answer. [2 points each]
1. Every Abelian group is cyclic.
2. Every subset of every group is a subgroup under the induced operation.
3. All generators of Z20 are prime numbers.
4. The order of the element of a cyclic group is equal to the number elements in the
group
5. If the subgroup is cyclic, then its group is cyclic.
II. Either give an example with a brief justification of a subgroup/group with the
property described, or explain why no example exists. [3 points each]
1. A finite cyclic group having four generators.
2. A finite group that is cyclic.
3. A cyclic group having only one generator.
III. Answer the following neatly and completely. Show any necessary solutions.
1. Find all the subgroup of Z22 and draw their lattice diagram. [10 points]
2. Suppose that G is a cyclic group of order 48. How many subgroups does G have?
Explain your answer. [6 points]
3. For n = 5, 9, 15, determine whether U(n) is a cyclic group or not. When it is cyclic
list all the generators. [10 points]
