Indonesia Rock Atlas Overview

The document summarizes the geology of the South Sumatra Basin in Indonesia. It describes the dominant Tertiary deposits and pre-Tertiary basement rocks of the basin. It also details the stratigraphy, including the Jatibarang Volcanic Formation from the Middle Eocene to Oligocene periods, the Cibulakan Formation from the Early to Middle Miocene, the Parigi Formation from the Middle to Late Miocene, and the Cisubuh Formation from the Late Miocene to Pliocene. Pictures and descriptions of outcrops, cores, and thin sections are provided.

Stratigraphy

Stratigraphy
The stratigraphy of the Northwest
Java Basin consists of: Pre-Tertiary,
Jatibarang Volcanic Formation,
Cibulakan Formation, Parigi
Formation, and Cisubuh Formation.
Jatibarang Volcanic Formation
(Middle Eocene – Oligocene)
This formation is a hydrocarbon
producer in the Jatibarang sub-basin.
Two different type of reservoir rocks
are distinguished:
1. Massive tuffs where porosity
and permeability are from
fractures,
2. A conglomerate reservoir.
The first type is found in the
Jatibarang Field, and the second one
in the Cemara Field.
Cibulakan Formation
(Early Miocene – Middle Miocene)
This formation is divided into the
Upper Cibulakan Member and the
Lower Cibulakan Member. The
Upper Cibulakan Member consists of
shales, silts, with intercalation of fine
sandstones and limestones in the
lower part which locally develop as
good reservoir rocks (Zone 16, Zone
15, Zone 14).
Zone 16 in Cilamaya Selatan
developed as a reefal limestone which
produced oil. The thickness of the
Upper Cibulakan varies from 500 to
900 meters.
The Lower Cibulakan Member is
divided into two parts, the Baturaja
Formation in the upper part, and the
Talang Akar Formation in the lower
part. The Baturaja Formation consists
mainly of limestones and in some
local areas reefs have developed. The
Baturaja contains good producing
reservoirs. The Talang Akar consists
of shales and sandstones with high
carbonaceous content. According to
the geochemical analysis, the Talang
Akar is a good source rock which
contains a Total Organic Carbon of
about 20 percent. Talang Akar
sandstones have also been proven as
good producing zones. (e.g. in the
North Cilamaya structure).
Parigi Formation
(Middle Miocene – Late Miocene)
This formation is a limestone locally
represented by reefs in some areas.
The Parigi Formation in Tugu Barat,
Gantar and Pasirjadi structures
produces hydrocarbons.The thickness
ranges from 50 to 300 meters.
Cisubuh Formation
(Late Miocene – Pliocene)
This formation consists of
interbedded clays, shales and
sandstones. None of the structures in
the Northwest Java Basin yield
hydrocarbons from this formation.
