In order to produce the sound based on Hornbostel-Sachs classification of instruments:

A. Chordophones (Stringed Instruments) produces sound by vibrating strings attached to two


different points. You can make a higher sound by shortening the string.
Kudyapi is a 1 ½ m long guitar consisting two strings and is made of wood.

Instrumental Music of Mindanao

Nature influenced the development of the musical instruments as their music mostly
imitates nature’s sound and movement. The music of Mindanao varies its provinces as they
reflect their vivid culture and tradition. Music has been incorporated on their daily life, they
have different songs for every life events from conception to death, to everyday basic tasks
such as fishing, harvesting and hunting. They mainly utilized what is available on their
locality. It varies sources, from barks of trees, bamboos, wood, animal skin and metal. Some
of their known ethnic musical instruments are kulintang ensemble, gabbang, kudyapi, suling
and kubing. Musical accompaniments are used in their ceremonial rituals & music that
usually involves the community as they dance through their ritual. Their ensembles varies not
only the materials but as well with the composition of the ensemble, how it is played or the
technique used to play the instrument. They may have different names but they belong to
the same instrument classification. As time progressed, their musicality remains as their
own artistic expression of their culture and tradition.

2. Kudlong is a two stringed lute made of wood, one string is for the melody while the other
string is for the drone. The neck of the lute has eight frets glued on it while the body of the
instrument has a carved geometric patterns. It is adorned with horse hair located on its neck
and the head; its tail has two pieces of Carabao skin and the strap is adorned with bead work. It
is 98 cm long with 8.5 cm width and 5.5 cm height

C. Idiophones ( Percussion Instruments) produces sound by the way of the whole body of the

1. Kulintang is an eight gong kettles which are laid horizontally upon a rack creating an entire kulintang set
called apasangan. This idiophone functions as a lead/central melodic instrument for the entire ensemble.

2. Gabbang It is a bamboo xylophone with one end wider than the other and with an open top. It
is played by striking the wooden bars with a wooden hammer.

d. Membranophones (Drum Instruments) produces sound by vibrating of stretched
membranes. You can make a higher sound with a smaller drum head.

1.Dabakan is a goblet – shaped drum which has a single head covered with goat, lizard or
snakeskin and it is struck with two thin 18 inches long bamboo sticks.

Gandingan is a set of four small narrow – rimmed and suspend gongs which is played as part of
the Kulintang ensemble

Dabaduan is a hour glass shaped drum made of wood, the membrane is made of carabao skin.

The drum is part of the Kulintang ensemble.

How to make an improvised instrument at home:

the cardboard box

Generalization:

Music has always been a part of the lives of people it is tied up with nature, occupations
and their religious beliefs. Instrumental music are usually identified according to the types
of ensembles, playing styles or instruments classification. Their music is made vibrant
through the use of various instruments used to accompany their songs.
