Benzene-Toluene Distillation Stages

This document provides a problem solving a distillation process to separate a liquid feed of benzene and toluene. The feed contains 55% benzene and 45% toluene at a rate of 100 kgmol/hr. The distillate is required to have 98% benzene and the bottoms stream is required to have 4% benzene. Using a reflux ratio of 1.6 and Ponchon-Savarit method, the document determines the number of theoretical stages and optimum feed stage for the distillation column. The solution shows calculations for distillate and bottoms rates, reflux rate, and condenser flowrate. Data from an Excel file is referenced for vapor-liquid equilibrium values

CHE 501 - Separation Process Quiz 1 - Finals

Problem:
A liquid feed of 100 kgmol/hr of benzene toluene at the boiling point contains 55 mol%
benzene and 45% mol toluene. It is being distilled at 101.325kPa pressure to give a distillate
with xD =0.98 and of xW=0.04. Using a reflux ratio of 1.6 and using Ponchon-Savarit Method ,
determine the number of theoretical stages and the optimum feed stage.

Given:
F = 100 kgmol/hr P = 101.325 kPa
Xf = 0.55 mol benzene Reflux ratio: 1.6
= 0.45 mol toluene
Xd = 0.98
Xw = 0.04

Required:
(a) No. of theoretical stages
(b) Optimum feed stage

Solution:

OMB: F = D + W
100 = D + W
CB: xF F = xD D + xW W
(0.55)(100) = (0.98)D + (0.04)W
Solving simultaneously,
D = 54.255 kgmol/hr
W =45.745 kgmol/hr

Reflux Ratio:

Lo
R
D
Lo
1 .6 
54.255kgmol / hr

Lo = 86.808 kgmol/hr
Overall material balance around condenser:

V1 = Lo + D
= 86.808 + 54.255
V1 = 141.063 kgmol/hr
