ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT

School of Architecture & Planning

University of Management & Technology Lahore

COURSE TITLE / CODE: Architecture Design Studio-VI / AR-421

SEMESTER / BATCH: Spring 2020 / Batch-07

RESOURSE PERSONS:(Section – B) Ar. Zahid T. Ahmed), Ar. Nasir Chaudhry

(Section –A)Ar. Saima Gulzar, Ar. Usman Muhammad Buksh

Course Description [as per HEC]:

Design Studios aim to develop, apply and test students architectural design skills. This entails developing
an understanding of a range of technical, theoretical, historical and professional issues, the ability to
integrate this understanding into their design proposals and the communication techniques necessary to
demonstrate these.

In this Studio course, students are engaged in complex design and urban scale projects that confront
issues of architectural design in Civic and Urban scenarios of collective space. Two major projects are
proposed in this studio which shall involve complex public sites and institutional/civic programs and
would require a great deal of varied independent work to be produced by the students who after having
acquired adequate skill and knowledge in previous studios, can now direct a line of inquiry and sustain it
through design work over the semester. The creation of a well developed and comprehensive design
solution incorporating issues of master planning, comprehensive architectural planning, form and
volumetric study that is informed by previously studied subjects is expected.

Learning Objective:

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

• Apply acquired design knowledge and skill to an inclusive architectural project.
• Critically analyze, evaluate and make informed judgment on a selected range of technical,
programmatic, theoretical, historical and professional issues and their implications for the building
design, as they have already acquired adequate knowledge and skill in previously studied subjects.
• Integrate practical and theoretical knowledge into the design process, strictly meeting the parameters
of given timeline.
• Develop & enhance your ability to professionally communicate their design intention and exercise a
high level of independence, initiative & self guidance in the execution of their design project.
Proposed Project-II –

Tourism and Hospitality Management Campus Design in Soan / Kurang River Valley

Time Duration: 8 Weeks

Project Introduction:

Proposed campus shall be offering Degree, Diploma and Certificate programs in Hospitality, Culinary,
Travel, Tourism and Airline Management and shall be designed for ‘on campus’ living of Students,
Faculty, Technical, and Administrative Staff. It is intended to initially accommodate approx. 650-700
Students.

Tourism and Hospitality industry caters to approximately 11% of the global workforce and contributes
about 10% to the global GDP. This industry is meant for today’s youth who are aspiring to pursue an
international career in this field. This experience will not only increase their knowledge of different
languages and cultures but will also gradually groom them as most sought-after personnel in this
profession at global level. Because of its wide range of business activities and specialization, hospitality
sector also allows them to easily change fields within the industry.

Campuses for Educational learning and Research are not only large social engines but have a strong
impact on the regions they inhabit. Such campuses are a challenge to ones creativity and innovative
capabilities in terms of testing the potentialities of different concepts in master planning / placement of
building blocks, spatial organization, communal planning and sustainable development. “A university
campus is like a microcosm of a city.”

For the purposes of this particular project, campus design shall emerge as an overall comprehensive
master plan to be developed on a contoured riparian site and harmoniously incorporating natural and
artificial landscapes to achieve an environment that suits and blends with the needs of an academic
institution. This focuses on careful and sensitive site planning and placement of buildings, streets,
walkways, social gathering areas, parking, and open green spaces.

What to Look For while Collecting Relevant Data, Literature Review / Case Studies

1. Sustainability & Conservation issues in Campus Planning / Design.

2. Campus land use & master planning incorporating ‘Ordering Principles of Spatial Organization’.

3. Infrastructure Layout, Surface Water Drainage & Rain Water Harvesting.

4. Building / Spatial Linkages, Pedestrian and Vehicular Traffic Movement Patterns and Segregation
of the two.

5. Parking facilities for Cars, Buses and Bikes.

6. Service and Delivery System.

7. Comprehensive waste Collection & Disposal System.

8. Infrastructure & Facilities Development, Considerations for Future Expansion.

9. An intelligent, interactive and appropriate Landscape design complimenting Campus life.

Some Key Planning & Design Considerations For this Project

✔ Spatial Organization& Site Zoning

Positioning, massing, orientation and land use are important factors that determine the character of a campus. Special emphasi
zoning, and development of concepts that will eventually lead to the master plan.

✔ Campus Master Plan

The primary emphasis of this project is the development of a detailed and well-designed master plan, one that emerges from a d
ideal master plan doesn’t waste unnecessary space, and is in perfect harmony with existing conditions, usage, and requirements

✔ Campus Architecture

The campus buildings should be designed so that they contribute to the surroundings, streets, and pedestrian ways on each side
campus, and should contribute to the life and activity of streets and walks. All the environmental factors should be taken into ac

✔ Parking

The parking for cars, bikes, bicycles, and university buses must be provided and designed at appropriate locations according to s
pavements, sidewalks, ramps, bus stops, signage, parking barriers and proper landscaping of parking area must be considered.

✔ Landscape Design

Landscaping of the campus will give it its character. Urban concepts of street design with reference to landscaping must be stud
streets, parking areas, walkways and open space must be provided. Type of vegetation used can also be discussed.

✔ Architectural Style

The architectural style used determines the design of the campus from early on in the development process. Different architectu
organization, zoning, and eventually the built physical reality of the campus.

SITE LOCATION

A contoured riparian site is being selected in the Potohar Region as per details given on the map.
