Cinderella. What Else?

Scene 1 The scullery

Buttons

Good evening everyone and welcome to the show. Just before we start there are a few
things you should know. My name is Buttons, and each time I appear I want every single
person to give a big, loud cheer. Can you do that? Let’s try it then.
(He exits and immediately reappears)

Hello everybody! (Audience responds) Hello everybody! (Audience responds more

enthusiastically) That’s better. Thank you. Now come with me and I’ll introduce you to my
best friend, Cinderella. She lives in the castle but her wicked stepsisters make her do all
the laundry and the cooking, and she never has any nice clothes. Let’s go and see if we
can cheer her up. Cinders, where are you?

Cinderella is cleaning the kitchen. She is sad, lonely, dressed in rags, but beautiful. Her pet
cat, Catatouille is warming herself in front of the fire.

Cinderella

Oh, hello Buttons, sit yourself down and I’ll make you a nice cup of tea. First let me just
mend these shoes, polish the silver, light the fire, peel the vegetables and feed the pigs.
Oh, I’m completely exhausted and I’ve still got all the washing and ironing to do before
bed.

Buttons

You need a break, I’ll help Catatouille make the tea. Are you going to the Ball tomorrow?

Cinderella

I hope so, but I’ll have to make myself a dress, I can’t go in these rags.

Cinderella’s stepsisters, Giletjaunia and Hindenburg enter noisily, carrying armfuls of shoes
and clothes. Catatouille hisses at them and then leaves with Buttons to make the tea.

Giletjaunia

Did someone mention the ball? Oh, I’m so looking forward it! I can’t wait! The Prince is so
handsome and this is my big chance! I’m going to get him to propose to me. But what
shall I wear? I’ve got absolutely nothing. Cinderella, you must make me something.

Cinderella

But you have plenty of lovely dresses and I only have this old worn-out outfit - if I am to
go to the ball I have to make myself a gown tonight.

Hindenburg

Don’t be ridiculous! No one wants you at the ball - you’re skinny and plain and boring.
Why would the nobility want to mix with you? What am I going to wear? (she starts
searching through the pile of lovely dresses, rejecting them one by one). You’ll just have to
make me something too.

Giletjaunia

Puss, puss! Pussy where are you? Where is that flea ridden catissier? I want some tea.
No, I’ve changed my mind, I want some coffee. And chocolate cake with cream and icing.

Hindenburg

And I want crumpets with butter and jam and a Tropézienne and lemon meringue pie. Cat!

They rush out taking all the clothes with them.

Scene 2 The ugly sisters bedroom

Cinderella has finished the dresses for her sisters and they are trying them on and
admiring themselves in the mirror, and posting selfies on Instagram.

Hindenburg

It won’t go over my hips - you’ve made it too small, you stupid girl! I can’t do up the zip.

Cinderella (under her breath)

You’ve eaten too many cakes.

Giletjaunia

Give it to me! I’ll wear it. Oh, it’s far too short! You really are a stupid girl.

Hindenburg

I need some earrings. And a necklace. And bracelets. And what else …?

Giletjaunia

I need some stilettos, and a pashmina, and what else …?

They fight over a dress until they tear it in half. Cinderella quietly picks it up and folds it.
They keep swapping clothes until they fashion two outrageous outfits with scarves and
jewels.
Scene 3 The scullery

Hindenburg

Where’s my invitation? And my iPhone?

Giletjaunia

Where’s the carriage? (Shouting) Cinderella! Call us an Uber! Quickly!

The clock strikes 7 and they rush off clutching their smartphones.

Cinderella

If only I could go! Since my father died, I have no money for clothes or parties like my
sisters. I wish they were not so cruel and would help me with the housework occasionally.

SONG

I have a dream, a song to sing

To help me cope with anything

If you see the wonder of a fairy tale

You can take the future even if you fail

I believe in angels

Something good in everything I see

I believe in angels

When I know the time is right for me

I'll cross the stream, I have a dream

I have a dream, a fantasy

To help me through reality

And my destination makes it worth the while

Pushing through the darkness still another mile

I believe in angels

Something good in everything I see

I believe in angels

When I know the time is right for me

I'll cross the stream, I have a dream

I'll cross the stream, I have a dream …

She puts another log onto the fire and suddenly there is a big flash and a puff of smoke.

Fairy Godmother

Cinderella, you shall go to the ball!

Cinderella

Who said that? Where are you?

(She turns to her right, while the Fairy Godmother goes to her left)

Audience

She’s behind you!

(Cinderella turns to her left as the godmother goes to her right)

Cinderella

Where is she?

Audience (more insistently)

She’s behind you!

Cinderella

Who are you? Where did you come from?

Fairy Godmother

Oh, I’m so sorry, my dear. I should have introduced myself. I’m your fairy godmother and
there’s no time to waste if you’re to go to the ball.

Cinderella

But I have nothing to wear! Nor any way to get there.

Fairy Godmother

Trifles, trifles! Fetch me a pumpkin. (She looks puzzled) Now, what else?
Oh I remember, six white mice, a rat and six lizards.

Cinderella scurries around collecting the items

Fairy Godmother (waving her magic wand)

Abracadabra! Kalamazoo! IloveGeorgeClooneyandhelovesmetoo!

(The pumpkin transforms into a carriage, the mice into fine white horses, the rat into a
coachman and the lizards into footmen dressed in fine clothes and powdered wigs.)
And now for you, my dear!

(She waves the wand and Cinderella’s rags are transformed into a beautiful ball gown and
her threadbare moccasins into glittering glass slippers.)

Off you go, and enjoy the ball, but be careful you leave before midnight because the
carriage will turn back into a pumpkin, the horses into mice and your dress into rags.

Cinderella

I don’t know how to thank you, Fairy Godmother.

Fairy Godmother

If you enjoy the ball, that will be thanks enough, my dear. Now go, quickly, and don’t
forget, whatever you do, you must leave before the clock strikes twelve!

Cinderella

I won’t forget. (She runs out)

Scene 4 The Ball

Music and dancing

Prince Charming (speaking to his page, Dandini)

Who is that beautiful girl? I must be introduced to her.

Mademoiselle, will you do me the honour of dancing with me?

Giletjaunia (giggling flirtatiously)

Me sir? With you, sir? Why, of course, sir.

Hindenburg (pushing her sister out of the way)

He meant me! Why would he want to dance with a giant like you? You’re an elephant.
You’re a giraffe. You’re so tall your head’s in the clouds. What’s the weather like up there?

Giletjaunia (pushing back)

No one wants to dance with a speck like you. You’re a mouse. You’re a flea. He’ll tread on
you if he’s not careful, you’re so tiny.

Hindenburg

He’ll dance with me and he’ll fall in love with me and ask me to marry him.

Giletjaunia

Oh no he won’t

Hindenburg

Oh yes he will

Giletjaunia

Oh no he won’t

Hindenburg

Oh yes he will

Prince Charming (taking advantage of the sisters’ argument to speak to Cinderella)

Will you dance this foxtrot with me?

Cinderella

With pleasure, sir.

Full cast sings Dancing Queen

SONG

Ooh, you can dance, you can jive

Having the time of your life

Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene

Digging the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low

Looking out for a place to go

Where they play the right music, getting in the swing

You come to look for a king

Anybody could be that guy

Night is young and the music's high

With a bit of rock music, everything is fine

You're in the mood for a dance

And when you get the chance

[Chorus]

You are the dancing queen

Young and sweet, only seventeen

Dancing queen

Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah

You can dance, you can jive

Having the time of your life

Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene

Digging the dancing queen

You're a teaser, you turn 'em on

Leave 'em burning and then you're gone

Looking out for another, anyone will do

You're in the mood for a dance

And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen

Young and sweet, only seventeen

Dancing queen

Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah

You can dance, you can jive

Having the time of your life

Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene

Digging the dancing queen

Digging the dancing queen

As the music ends we hear the clock striking midnight

Cinderella

Oh no! I must go before my clothes turn back into rags.

Prince Charming

Stop! Please stay for just one dance…

Cinderella runs down the steps and out into the garden, dropping one of her shoes. The
Prince follows but only sees her back as she disappears through the gilded gates. He
picks up the shoe.

Prince Charming

Oh, Dandini, she is the most beautiful creature I have ever seen. She is the woman I will
marry. You must help me to find her.

Dandini

Certainly sire, but where do we start? No one knows who she is.

Prince Charming

We’ll take this shoe and visit every house in the land until we find the foot it fits. There’s
no time to lose. Fetch me my fastest horse and my warmest cloak.

Scene 5 The home of Cinderella and her step-sisters

Cinderella is sitting knitting with her cat beside her. She is dressed in rags as usual.

Oh, my lovely Catatouille. I wish you could have seen the Prince. He was so handsome,
and kind and well-groomed. And the palace was clean and sparkling with jewels

Hindenburg and Giletjaunia rush in

Hindenburg

Quick, quick, the prince is coming. You need to do our hair and tighten our corsets.

Giletjaunia

And we should have cakes - canelés and macarons and milles feuilles and réligieuses and
fraisiers …

Le Meilleur Catissier

Meow. Grrrrr. Hissssss!

Cinderella (casually)

Why is the prince coming?

Hindenburg and Giletjaunia speaking at the same time

He’s coming to ask me to marry him!

Giletjaunia

Me!

Hindenburg

No, me!

The door bell rings and the two sisters run to answer it. They get stuck together in the
doorway and push and pull until they break free and fall onto the floor.

Buttons (entering through the other door)

His Royal Highness, the Prince Charming!

Giletjaunia and Hindenburg jump up and rush into the room, completely hiding Cinderella.
The Prince enters followed by Dandini carrying a velvet cushion
Dandini

My master seeks to know the identity of she who lost this golden shoe. We have searched
the length and breadth of the kingdom but have found no one with a dainty enough foot.
Do either of you ladies know to whom the slipper belongs?

Hindenburg and Giletjaunia speaking at the same time

It’s mine!

Hindenburg

Give it to me!

Giletjaunia

Me first!

She huffs and puffs to try to fit into the shoe but it is impossible

Hindenburg

I told you so! My turn!

The shoe is also too small for her

Cinderella, fetch me a knife, if I just cut off my little toe it’ll fit, I know it will.

Prince Charming (spotting Cinderella for the first time)

Oh, excuse me miss, I didn’t see you there. I don’t suppose you would consider trying the
shoe, would you? You are the last person in all the land.

Cinderella takes the shoe and slips it onto her foot. It fits perfectly.

Prince Charming

It’s you! You are the beautiful creature I danced with! Oh please, say you’ll marry me.

Cinderella

But I don’t even know your name.

Prince Charming

I apologise. I’m Guy de Molimard, Prince of the Amoureux

Cinderella

Then, I’ll marry you with pleasure

SONG

I feel it in my fingers

I feel it in my toes

The love that's all around me

And so the feeling grows

It's written on the wind

It's everywhere I go

Oh, yes it is

So if you really love me

Come on and let it show

You know I love you, I always will

My mind's made up by the way that I feel

There's no beginning, there'll be no end

'Cause on my love you can depend

I see your face before me

As I lay on my bed

I cannot get to thinking

Of all the things you said

You gave your promise to me and I gave mine to you

I need someone beside me in everything I do

Oh, yes I do

You know I love you, I always will

My mind's made up by the way that I feel

There's no beginning, there'll be no end

'Cause on my love you can depend …
