{was the early 60"s when I first wrote a
letter to Sun Records. The subject of my
letter was Jerry Lee Lewis, I wished to
slate that T thought he was an incredible
‘entertainer and 1 also thought it was a
terrible injustice the way that the public
was treating him over the marriage to his
cousin Myra. The letter fell into the hands of Kay
Martin, a close associate of Terry's. To make a
long story short I eventually met Kay in person as
well as Jerry Lee himself and was given the job of
answering some of Jerry's mail, Much ofthe mail
‘came from England and this is how I became
interested in the British music scene even before
the Beatles invaded the U.S.A. In the next couple
of years, I made the aquaintance of a British hotror
rock artist named Sereaming Lord Sutch, At the
time, he had a top 20 novelty hit on the British
charis entitled "Jack the Ripper’. A couple of
British rock music papers printed some letters of
‘mine praising their music and my connection with
Jerry Lee. This got quite a bit of response
wil-wise. One night I received a letter from an up
and coming young British guitarist who wished to
brrespond arid exchange records through the mail.
He said he was a fan of Jerry Lee's music. He said
hhe had lots of information concerning Lord Sutch,

1977 INTERVIEW (PART III)
What is the amplifier serup you're using
‘Onstage? Marshall 100s which are
‘customized in New York so they've got 200 wats.
T've got four unstacked cabinets, and I've got a
\wahivah pedal and an MXR unit. Everything else
is total lash, {laughs} I've got a harmonizer, a
theremin, violin bow, and an Echoplex unit.
‘Are there certain settings you use on the
Depending on the acousties of the places the
volume is up 10 about three, and the rest is pretty
standard,
When was the first time you used the violin
bow?
“The first time I recorded with it was with the
Yardbirds. But the idea was put to me by a
classical siring player when I was doing studio
work. One of us tried to bow the guitar and it
‘Worked. At that point I was just bowing it, but the
other effects I've obviously come up with on my
fown- using wah-wah, and echo. You have to put
rosin on the bow and the rosin sticks tothe stings
and makes it vibrate
What kind of picks and strings do you use?
Herco heavy-gauge nylon picks and Ernie
Ball Super Slinky strings.
What guitars are you using?
God, this is really hard, there are so many
My Les Paul, the usual one and I've got a spare
‘one of those if anything goes wrong. I've got a
double-neck: and one of those Fender
String-benders that was made for me by Gene
Parsons. I've cut it back from what Iwas going to
use on tour. [have with me Martin guitar and a
Gibson A-4 mandolin. The Martin is one of the
cheap ones: it's not the one with the herringbone
buck or anything like that. It's probably 4 D-18,
it's gor those nice Grovers {tuning machines} on
it, I've got a Gibson Everly Brothers which was
zaiven to me by Ronnie Wood. That's like the
‘current favorit, but I don’t take it out on the road
because its really @ personal guitar. Tkeep it with
me in the room. It's a beauty; it’s fantastic,
‘There’s only a few of those around: Ron's got one
and Keith Richard's got one, and I've got one as
‘well, So it's really nice. Thaven't had a chance 10
use it on record ye, but T will because it’s got such
danice sound. Let's see, what else have we gor? T
know when I come onstage it looks like a guitar
‘shop, the way they're all standing up there. But
[sold off all my guitars before [left for America;
there was alot of old stuff hanging around which I
didn't need. [t's no point having things if you
don't need them. When all the equipment came
over here, we had done our rehearsals, and we
\were really on tap, really in tip-top form. Then
‘Robert caught laryngitis, and we had to postpone a
lot of dates and reshutile them, I didn’t touch a
guitar for five weeks. T got a bit panicky about
that- after Wo years off the road and that’s alot 10
think about. And I'm stil only warming ups 1 stil
cean't coordinate a lot of things I need to be doing.
Gerting by, but it's not right; I don’t feel 100%
right yet
What year is the Les Paul you're using now?
"59, It's been rescraped (repainted), but that’s all
gone now because it chipped off. Joe Walsh got it
Tor me.
‘Do you think when you went from the
Telecaster to the Les Paul that your playing
changed?
'Yes, [think so. It’s more of a fight with a
Telecaster, but there are rewards. ‘The Gibson’
{gota stereatyped sound maybe, I don’t know. 1°s
ot beautiful sustain to it, and I like sustain
jecause it relates to bowed instruments and
everything: this Whole area that everybody's been
pushing and experimenting in, When you think
About it it's mainly susta
Do you use special tunings on the electric
guitar?
Al the time; they're my own that I've worked out,
‘0 I'd rather keep those to myself really. They're
never open tunings: I have used those, but most of
the things T've written have not been open tunings,0 you can get more chords into them.
Did you ever meet any of those folk players
‘you admire- Bert Jansch, John Renbourn or any
‘ofthe?
No, and the most terrifying thing of all
happened to me about a few months ag0, Jansch’s
playing appeared as if it was going down or
Something, and it turns out he's got arthritis. 1
really think he's one of the best. He was, without
aa doubt, the one who crystallized so many things.
‘As much as Hendrix had done to electric, I think
hhe's done to acoustic. He was really way, Way
ahead. For something like that to happen is such &
tragedy, with a mind as brilliant as that. There you
go. Another player whose physical handicap
dicin't stop him is Django Reinhardt. For his
LP they pulled-hiny out of retirement to do it i's
fon Barclay Records in France. He'd been retired
for years, and i's fantastic, ‘You know the story
about him in the caravan and losing fingers and
such,But the record is just fantastic. He must have
been playing all the time 1o be that good- it’s
horrityingly good. Horrifying, but i's always
good to hear perennial
players like that; like Les
Paul and people like that
You listen to Les
Paul?
(Oh, yeah, You can
tell Jeff (Beck) did too,
can't you? have you ever
heard "It’s Been a Long
‘Time (mid-forties single
by Les Paul Trio with
Bing Crosby} You ought
to hear that, He does
everything on that,
everything in one go and
it’s just one guitar: it’s
basically one guitar even
though they've tracked on
sythms and stuff, But my
goodness, his introductory
Chords and everything are
fantastic. He sets the
whole tone, and then he
{goes into this solo which
is Tantastic. Now that's
where I heard I heard
feedback first- from Les
Paul. Also vibratos and
things. Even before B.B.
King, you know, I've
traced a ell of lot of rock
and roll, little riffs and
things back to Les Paul,
(Chuck Berry, Cliff Gallup
and all those- it's all
there. But then Les Paul was influenced by
Reinhard, wasn't he? Very much so, Tean't get

"You said that Erie Clapton was the person
arho synthesized the Les Paut sound?
‘Yeah, without a doubt. When he was with the
Bluesbreaers, it was just magic combinations he
{got one ofthe Marshall amps, and away he went

“That was very sting stl.
Do you think you were responsible for any
specif enter sound?
“The guitar parts on "Trampled Underfoot",
this guy Nick Kent came out with his idea about
tow he thought that was a really revolutionary
sound, Thand't realized that anyone would think i
was, but Tean explain exactly how i's done.

that, apart from one point, ‘That ws all other
instruments, all syhesizers. Every instrament was
a process so it didn’t sound like what it
ly was- the voives, drones, mantras and even
tabla drums. When you've got a collage of, say,
four ofthese sounds fogether, people will be drawn
right in because there will be sounds they hadn't
heard before. That's basically what I'm into:
collages and tissues of sound with emotional
intensity and melody and all that. But you know
there are so many good people around like John
MeLaughlin and people like that, Its totally
different thing than what I'm doing,
‘Do you think he has a sustaining quality as
a guitarist?
He's always had that technique right from
when I first met him when he was working ina
guitar shop. [would say he was the best jazz
guitarist in England then, in the traditional mode of
(jazz stylist) Johnny Smith and Tal Farlow: a
combination of those two is exactly what he
sounded like. He was easily the best guitarist ia
England and he was working ina guitar shop. And
that’s what I say- you hear so many good people
I
around those conditions. 1'IL tell you one thi

(British pop/rock guitarist) Albert Lee and all the
people that seem to be like white elephants
recognition. I think he's really good, bloody
brilliant, oo, but T haven't heard hit in ages. But
[know that everytime I've heard him, he's bloody
better and better.
Do you feel that your playing grows all the
time?
T've got two different approaches, like @
schizophrenic guitarist, really. I mean onsiage is
totally different that the way that T approach it ia
the studio. Presence and my control over all the
contributing factors to that LP, the fact that it was
done in three weeks, and ail the rest of it, is so
good for me. It was just good for everythin
really, even though it was a very anxious point,
and the anxiety shows group-wise you know, “Is
Robert going to walk again from his auto accident
in Greece?" and allthis sort of thing. But I guess

the video soon,
‘There is a "Lucifer Rising” box set in the
works. It features the movie that Page did the
soundirack for in 1976. It should be a great
package, For anyone that is interested, contact

13 DBOARD:
A few more additions of soundboard releases
comes our way this month, ‘They are all from the
1973 North American tour, The first is Mobile,
Alabama May 13th, 1973. ‘The first thing f
noticed while first Histening to this tape was that it
played too fast, way too fast! I managed to get a
tape deck with pitch control and adjusted ito the
proper speed. If you can your
hands on one, I strongly suggest
{you hear them at the right speed. It
makes it much more enjoyable.
‘The show kicks off in atypical "73
fashion. A great "Rock and Rol!
saris off complete with Plant's
pening voice crack. It goes into
‘Celebration Day” then "Black
Dog”. All are very fine versions
‘Over the Hills and Far Away
comes next which has Page
blistering hot! These shows prove
that the °73 versions of "Over the
Hills..." are the best. "Misty
Mountain Hop" follows which goes
right into an excellent version of
Since I've Been Loving You
Jones" feature spot of "No Quarter
is great. Bonzo comes ina bit
Stronger for "The Song Remains the
Same’ and especially "The Rain
Song” with some great kettle drum
‘work, A truly fantastic "Dazed and
Confused’ is next. Unfortunatel
nly. "Stairway to Heaven” and
"Moby Dick” are the only other
songs to be heard from this show=it
is incomplete. Overal, the sound quality is great
with the only real uouble being the incorrect
speed.
‘A real treat follows. The next night ater the
Mobile show was New Orleans May 14, 1973. T
think the performance is even better on this show.
The sound quality is prety mediocre as it starts off
but gels amazingly better half way through. The
songs are fairly similar: and Roll”
‘Celebration Day", "Black Dog”, "Over the HIIIs
and Far Away", "Misty Mountain Hop", Since I've
Been Loving You", "No Quarter", “The Song
‘Remains the Same", "The Rain Song and "Dazed
‘and and Confused", Throughout "Dazed" a great
transformation takes place, Not only isthe jam
incredible but the sound quality beings to improve
steadily. By the time "Stairway to Heaven’ starts,
the quality is amazing. Another great feature
bout this show is that it doesn’t end after "Moby
Dick". Its the complete show!_ A great version of
"Heartbreaker" is played which goes into an
awesome “Whole Lotta Love". Great jamming.
during WLL, As if this wasn’t enough, they come
ut for another encore. ‘The best "73 version of
"Communication Breakdown" I've ever heard
closes off the show.
“The next soundboard show is Buffalo, NY
July 26th, 1973, The sound quality is great and
the performance is great as well. One thing 1noticed is that Jones seems to bea bit more up front in the mix. You can hear him a little more clearly
than the other shows, Not only can you hear him better but he also plays i
Uifferent bass line every time, ‘The song list is basically the same. As Page begins “Over the Hills,
redibly well He plays a
Someone lets offa firecracker. Pant immediately comments: "That's one guy that’s not on the same
Journey.” Unfortunately. the tape ends after "Stairway". There isa slight improvement in sound quality
throughout
‘More soundloards and a couple of new CDs - next month
