IL., Joachim VoB of West Germany and Diane Bernardo of Richmond, VI. (Uhope you're feeling better Diane.) One question that seemed to be Frequently asked in the leters concemed the Led Zeppelin concert advertisement on the back page of the first issue. The ad was for the November 2nd, 1969 show at the O'Keefe Center. Most people were wondering where the O°Keefe Center {vas Is in Toronto, Plant’s Manic Nirvana tour is hitting Canada and he's really anxious to Tet everyone know that here's here. Since he is now sponsored by Molson beer company, he has undertaken a huge advertising campaign for his Canadian tour. Commercials and ads are everywhere, There is even a "1990 Robert Plant Canadian Tour ‘Commemorative Cassette” being given away at local record stores which features the iwo unreleased songs from his latest album: "Big Love" and "Qompah", There were already available on a CD single. Plant has reportedly ‘changed his setlist once again. (Unfortunately,) he is now supposedly performing "Sick Again’, "Over the Hills & Far Away” and "The Crunge" Some good news is that they now perform “Anniversary” which features Plant on guitar as well “More reports on the Zeppelin box set due out ina few weeks: It isnow being said that it will be {limited edition elease, It may be available until ‘about March/April 1991 and then i's gone forever. ‘A song that is surely to make the box set (and will never be gone forever) is "Stairway to Heaven". It came in #1 (again!) in a countdown of the top Songs of all-time on radio station 97 Rock in Bullalo. Electric Magic is proud to offer you an exclusive photo offer. Ron Kellerman is now allowing some of his private and personal photographs of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin to become available to the public for the first time ever! He had been a good friend of Timmy Page Since the early 1960's and has literally seen it allt ‘The cover photograph of this month's issue was taken by Ron and will be soon available for purchase. (The photo isin full color!) ‘The first part of Ron's amazing story isin this month's issue {nd will continue for several issues. These photos fre a must for any collector and I strongly recommend them, More sets of photos will become available in the coming issues. I would Tike to thank Ron for allowing his photos and personal experiences to be shared with Zeppelin fans all around the world through Electric Magic Until next time... Sam Rajalo Ron Kellerman wih Rober ln an my Pgs {was the early 60"s when I first wrote a letter to Sun Records. The subject of my letter was Jerry Lee Lewis, I wished to slate that T thought he was an incredible ‘entertainer and 1 also thought it was a terrible injustice the way that the public was treating him over the marriage to his cousin Myra. The letter fell into the hands of Kay Martin, a close associate of Terry's. To make a long story short I eventually met Kay in person as well as Jerry Lee himself and was given the job of answering some of Jerry's mail, Much ofthe mail ‘came from England and this is how I became interested in the British music scene even before the Beatles invaded the U.S.A. In the next couple of years, I made the aquaintance of a British hotror rock artist named Sereaming Lord Sutch, At the time, he had a top 20 novelty hit on the British charis entitled "Jack the Ripper’. A couple of British rock music papers printed some letters of ‘mine praising their music and my connection with Jerry Lee. This got quite a bit of response wil-wise. One night I received a letter from an up and coming young British guitarist who wished to brrespond arid exchange records through the mail. He said he was a fan of Jerry Lee's music. He said hhe had lots of information concerning Lord Sutch, The lester was signed TIMMY PAGE, ‘Atthe time, Jimmy was playing with a band called Neil Christian and the Crusaders, He sent WITH RON KELLERMAN ‘me an incredible photograph of the band which 1 sail have to this day. Jimmy wrote the names of the members on the back of the pictur). Lord Sutch came to the U.S. on a business, pleasure trip and spent much of his time at my hhome. uring this Visit I remember him saying: “Hey, your buddy Jimmy is doing really well in Englanid. He's doing lots of sessions for artists like the Kinks and Donovan etc.". Tremember ice saying to my sister Denise: “Wouldn't it be Something if Jimmy someday became famous." 1 guess that did come to pass! ‘The Yardbirds came to the U.S. on a final our, Jimmy was with them atthe time. Lord Sutcih, myself and my fiancee Carol went to the Action House in Long island, New York to see Jimmy in person, AS far as I'm concerned, Jimmy ‘was the entire show that evening. His playing was absolutely fantastic and it was a preview of the exciting things to come in the near future. Later fon, in the dressing room, I got to hold his, psychadelic painted Telecaster guitar. Timmy was Telling us that he wasn't too happy with the Yardbirds latest single. He said that it "didn’t rock” and he was inthe process of starting t0 form ‘anew band. He said that he had a cool name and asked me what I thought of "Led Zeppelin”. Jimmy said "You know, lead like in heavy.” A Year or so later, I was working for a record and {ape distributor in North Jersey when we received 1 promo copy of anew Atlantic release. Te'was the very first Led Zeppelin LP. i turned it over and saw Jimmy on the ‘back of the cover, so Iran into the boss's office and told him to ship tons of it 10 all our accounts. He asked why and I said "because it's going to be bis!". OF course, at that moment I wasn't really Sure except that I saw Jimmy was part of it, When I got home later that day and Diayed it for the first time... | was SURE! Murray the K, a popular disc jockey of the sixties was promoting the ‘album and he: he air. He kept mentioning Led Zeppelin, the great new band featuring the extraordinary session guitarist Jimmy Page. Twas fortunate to beat the Fillmore East to see their first New York City appearance. What a night that was! fon Butterfly were the headliners on the strength of their hit "In A Gadda Da Vida." Zeppelin were second on the bill and came out right before them. They Started with "Train Kept a Rollin” with Timmy racing all over the stage while not missing a note on the guitar. Robert Plant thrilled the crowd with the incredible range of his-voice. By the third Song, the audience was already worked up when Timmy put his guitar down on the stage, took off the Jacket he was wearing, looked at Robert and EXCLUSIVE DHOTO OFFER! One evening in October 1969, legendary guitarist Jimmy Page visited a friend in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Pictures were taken that evening and on other occasions which rank among the rarest of photographs associated with Led Zeppelin, Most of the pictures are in full color. From that ‘moment on, it was pure magic! I don't think Y can even find the words to describe the-sheer magnificence of that performance. I mean each Song built to a resounding climax that left the audience absolutely breathless, AV the conclusion ‘of the performance and after several encores, the m.c. eame out and said "I think We have just witnessed the new kings of heavy metal!" Somehow, T woulda’t want to have been iron Butterfly coming out to follow that performance. It kind of reminds me of when Chuck Berry had to follow Jerry Lee Lewis on stage at the Brooklyn Fox Paramount after Jerry doused his baby grand piano with lighter fluid and set it ablaze during "Great Balls of Fire"! It ‘When Zeppelin was in the arca, I would usually go with my sister and we'd go to a side door, We would tell some guard to please et Jimmy know we came to Say hello land he would come back and escort us to Zep’s dressing room. Jimmy was such & friendly, down to earth and modest individual. It was a pleasure to be in his ‘company, RON’S INCREDIBLE STORY CONTINUES XO JIMMY PAGE 1977 INTERVIEW (PART III) What is the amplifier serup you're using ‘Onstage? Marshall 100s which are ‘customized in New York so they've got 200 wats. T've got four unstacked cabinets, and I've got a \wahivah pedal and an MXR unit. Everything else is total lash, {laughs} I've got a harmonizer, a theremin, violin bow, and an Echoplex unit. ‘Are there certain settings you use on the Depending on the acousties of the places the volume is up 10 about three, and the rest is pretty standard, When was the first time you used the violin bow? “The first time I recorded with it was with the Yardbirds. But the idea was put to me by a classical siring player when I was doing studio work. One of us tried to bow the guitar and it ‘Worked. At that point I was just bowing it, but the other effects I've obviously come up with on my fown- using wah-wah, and echo. You have to put rosin on the bow and the rosin sticks tothe stings and makes it vibrate What kind of picks and strings do you use? Herco heavy-gauge nylon picks and Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings. What guitars are you using? God, this is really hard, there are so many My Les Paul, the usual one and I've got a spare ‘one of those if anything goes wrong. I've got a double-neck: and one of those Fender String-benders that was made for me by Gene Parsons. I've cut it back from what Iwas going to use on tour. [have with me Martin guitar and a Gibson A-4 mandolin. The Martin is one of the cheap ones: it's not the one with the herringbone buck or anything like that. It's probably 4 D-18, it's gor those nice Grovers {tuning machines} on it, I've got a Gibson Everly Brothers which was zaiven to me by Ronnie Wood. That's like the ‘current favorit, but I don’t take it out on the road because its really @ personal guitar. Tkeep it with me in the room. It's a beauty; it’s fantastic, ‘There’s only a few of those around: Ron's got one and Keith Richard's got one, and I've got one as ‘well, So it's really nice. Thaven't had a chance 10 use it on record ye, but T will because it’s got such danice sound. Let's see, what else have we gor? T know when I come onstage it looks like a guitar ‘shop, the way they're all standing up there. But [sold off all my guitars before [left for America; there was alot of old stuff hanging around which I didn't need. [t's no point having things if you don't need them. When all the equipment came over here, we had done our rehearsals, and we \were really on tap, really in tip-top form. Then ‘Robert caught laryngitis, and we had to postpone a lot of dates and reshutile them, I didn’t touch a guitar for five weeks. T got a bit panicky about that- after Wo years off the road and that’s alot 10 think about. And I'm stil only warming ups 1 stil cean't coordinate a lot of things I need to be doing. Gerting by, but it's not right; I don’t feel 100% right yet What year is the Les Paul you're using now? "59, It's been rescraped (repainted), but that’s all gone now because it chipped off. Joe Walsh got it Tor me. ‘Do you think when you went from the Telecaster to the Les Paul that your playing changed? 'Yes, [think so. It’s more of a fight with a Telecaster, but there are rewards. ‘The Gibson’ {gota stereatyped sound maybe, I don’t know. 1°s ot beautiful sustain to it, and I like sustain jecause it relates to bowed instruments and everything: this Whole area that everybody's been pushing and experimenting in, When you think About it it's mainly susta Do you use special tunings on the electric guitar? Al the time; they're my own that I've worked out, ‘0 I'd rather keep those to myself really. They're never open tunings: I have used those, but most of the things T've written have not been open tunings, 0 you can get more chords into them. Did you ever meet any of those folk players ‘you admire- Bert Jansch, John Renbourn or any ‘ofthe? No, and the most terrifying thing of all happened to me about a few months ag0, Jansch’s playing appeared as if it was going down or Something, and it turns out he's got arthritis. 1 really think he's one of the best. He was, without aa doubt, the one who crystallized so many things. ‘As much as Hendrix had done to electric, I think hhe's done to acoustic. He was really way, Way ahead. For something like that to happen is such & tragedy, with a mind as brilliant as that. There you go. Another player whose physical handicap dicin't stop him is Django Reinhardt. For his LP they pulled-hiny out of retirement to do it i's fon Barclay Records in France. He'd been retired for years, and i's fantastic, ‘You know the story about him in the caravan and losing fingers and such,But the record is just fantastic. He must have been playing all the time 1o be that good- it’s horrityingly good. Horrifying, but i's always good to hear perennial players like that; like Les Paul and people like that You listen to Les Paul? (Oh, yeah, You can tell Jeff (Beck) did too, can't you? have you ever heard "It’s Been a Long ‘Time (mid-forties single by Les Paul Trio with Bing Crosby} You ought to hear that, He does everything on that, everything in one go and it’s just one guitar: it’s basically one guitar even though they've tracked on sythms and stuff, But my goodness, his introductory Chords and everything are fantastic. He sets the whole tone, and then he {goes into this solo which is Tantastic. Now that's where I heard I heard feedback first- from Les Paul. Also vibratos and things. Even before B.B. King, you know, I've traced a ell of lot of rock and roll, little riffs and things back to Les Paul, (Chuck Berry, Cliff Gallup and all those- it's all there. But then Les Paul was influenced by Reinhard, wasn't he? Very much so, Tean't get ry hands onthe records of Les Paul, the Les Pal Trio, and all that stuf. I've got all the Capitol LP'v and things. T mean he's the father of tal ‘ultstracking and everything else. Trt hadn't Been fri. there wouldnt have sen anything "You said that Erie Clapton was the person arho synthesized the Les Paut sound? ‘Yeah, without a doubt. When he was with the Bluesbreaers, it was just magic combinations he {got one ofthe Marshall amps, and away he went just happened, 1 thought he played Briliantly. “That was very sting stl. Do you think you were responsible for any specif enter sound? “The guitar parts on "Trampled Underfoot", this guy Nick Kent came out with his idea about tow he thought that was a really revolutionary sound, Thand't realized that anyone would think i was, but Tean explain exactly how i's done. ‘Again it's sor of of backwards echo and wah-waby T don't know how responsible I was for new sounds because there were 90 many good things happening sround that point around. the felease of the first Zeppelin album, like Hendrix and Clapton Were you focusing on anything in particatar on the frst Led Zeppetin LP with regards 10 ceratain ‘ettar sounds? The trouble is keeping a separation between sounds, 3 you don't have the same fultarefect all the ume Fha's where guitar orchestration comes i its socasy I've already Planned it iv’ already there: all the groundwork has been Gone now. "The dream has been accomplished by the computerized iixing console. ‘The sort of struggle to acheive so many things is over. Ast said, Ce got two things written, bar Tl be working on more. You can hear what I mean on Lucifer Rising. (Soundtrack for the unreleased Kenneth Anger film) You see, I didn’t play any guitar on that, apart from one point, ‘That ws all other instruments, all syhesizers. Every instrament was a process so it didn’t sound like what it ly was- the voives, drones, mantras and even tabla drums. When you've got a collage of, say, four ofthese sounds fogether, people will be drawn right in because there will be sounds they hadn't heard before. That's basically what I'm into: collages and tissues of sound with emotional intensity and melody and all that. But you know there are so many good people around like John MeLaughlin and people like that, Its totally different thing than what I'm doing, ‘Do you think he has a sustaining quality as a guitarist? He's always had that technique right from when I first met him when he was working ina guitar shop. [would say he was the best jazz guitarist in England then, in the traditional mode of (jazz stylist) Johnny Smith and Tal Farlow: a combination of those two is exactly what he sounded like. He was easily the best guitarist ia England and he was working ina guitar shop. And that’s what I say- you hear so many good people I around those conditions. 1'IL tell you one thi don’t know one musician who's siuck to his guns who was good in the early days that hasn't come through now with recognition from everybody (British pop/rock guitarist) Albert Lee and all the people that seem to be like white elephants recognition. I think he's really good, bloody brilliant, oo, but T haven't heard hit in ages. But [know that everytime I've heard him, he's bloody better and better. Do you feel that your playing grows all the time? T've got two different approaches, like @ schizophrenic guitarist, really. I mean onsiage is totally different that the way that T approach it ia the studio. Presence and my control over all the contributing factors to that LP, the fact that it was done in three weeks, and ail the rest of it, is so good for me. It was just good for everythin really, even though it was a very anxious point, and the anxiety shows group-wise you know, “Is Robert going to walk again from his auto accident in Greece?" and allthis sort of thing. But I guess the solo on "Achilles Last Stand” on Presence in the same tradition asthe solo from "Stairway to Heaven" on the fourth LP. It is on that li me" CANDID CAMERA sexy of Joachim Vol) ZEPPELIN TOUR GROUNDED? ith all the rumours of the "Zeppelin tour" in the past few years, I don't really pay attention to what the press of promoters say about it anymore ‘Therefore, [dont print any news about the so-called reunion tour unless I was prety sure that what was being said istrue. We've Il been hearing that stadiums all over North ‘America have been booked for the Zeppelin tour next spring. Personally, I don’t think it should ever happen. The following ance was waitten by Grant Burgess of Dundas, Ontario. The possibilty of a hed Zeppelin spring 1991 four Iooks less than likely to happen. Ifthe BCL Group was to promote a Led Zeppelin tour, why would Robert Plant have his Canadian tour promoted by the BCL Group's competition? Lot's of new developments to report in the collector's world. The most interesting new item isa great package from Israel. ‘This 10 ten tape compilation called "The ‘Missing Sides" features a taste of everything, The ‘whole package is extremely well done, Ithas 2 ‘very professional flair to it. Lots of great pictures are found throughout the booklet. Speaking of pictures, each cassette has a professionally done cover witha different picture fon each tape, The ape sleeves are very well done ‘with clearly marked song titles. ‘The only down side to “The Missing Sides” is thatthe quality on some ofthe concerts is inferior to the bootleg releases. Nevertheless, itis a great deal and Thighly recommend it for any collector. Ifyou want to start a collection of some of the best stuff available or even if you have “everything” this isa collection sure to go up in value time. I didn’t really notice it before seeing this video. Itis artistically covered with ‘mystical designs of what Plant would call "the deep and meaningless." It really looks great though. The video contains the usual set "Watching You", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", Billy's Revenge", "Tye Dye On The Highway’ Tn the Mood", "No Quarter’, "Liars Dance", ‘Going to California” , “Nirvana”, "Immigrant Song” and “Hurting Kind”. With all the new videos and all the ‘ifferent angles that they are shot from, we get to experience the show from every side. This show features the same songs with the addition of “Little By Little”. During "Liars Dance”, Plant sang bit. of "Gallows Pole". He seemed very energetic uring the Whole show and was having a great time. After the third encore, he didn’t seem like he Wanted to end the show. They closed it off with "Misty Mountain Hop”. 1 was amazed at all the flowers being given to Plant from the audience at the end of the show. He was all smiles. “There a tore Plant videos that will be reviewed next month, MTV showed a great imerview piece on “This Week in Rock" near the end of August. The interview shows Plant and the band all sitting cross-legged in a candle lit room. Plant is fooling faround on a sitar and they look as though they just Finished meditating. Also included is some great live footage of Plant shot by MTV at Alpine Valley Wisconsin, When asked whether he feels if it's right to play Zeppelin songs in his set Plant says: Yes, we should, It's a celebration of all time since I made my first record on CBS back in the ark ages” (Ed. Note: I wonder what fans would think of him playing some of his 1966 singles!) " For me it’s 0.k. to do that stuff occasionally, ‘There are certain songs I don’t want to touch and there are certain songs that really are time pieces tnd shouldn’t be touched... but some of them are a Celebration of good humour and sensibility and T think that's ok." He goes on to say: "Maybe we'd hhave 25% more people coming if we'd have had ‘big pop hits bout what get instead is people coming who Know this is, real hard rock. I managed to get a tape deck with pitch control and adjusted ito the proper speed. If you can your hands on one, I strongly suggest {you hear them at the right speed. It makes it much more enjoyable. ‘The show kicks off in atypical "73 fashion. A great "Rock and Rol! saris off complete with Plant's pening voice crack. It goes into ‘Celebration Day” then "Black Dog”. All are very fine versions ‘Over the Hills and Far Away comes next which has Page blistering hot! These shows prove that the °73 versions of "Over the Hills..." are the best. "Misty Mountain Hop" follows which goes right into an excellent version of Since I've Been Loving You Jones" feature spot of "No Quarter is great. Bonzo comes ina bit Stronger for "The Song Remains the Same’ and especially "The Rain Song” with some great kettle drum ‘work, A truly fantastic "Dazed and Confused’ is next. Unfortunatel nly. "Stairway to Heaven” and "Moby Dick” are the only other songs to be heard from this show=it is incomplete. Overal, the sound quality is great with the only real uouble being the incorrect speed. ‘A real treat follows. The next night ater the Mobile show was New Orleans May 14, 1973. T think the performance is even better on this show. The sound quality is prety mediocre as it starts off but gels amazingly better half way through. The songs are fairly similar: and Roll” ‘Celebration Day", "Black Dog”, "Over the HIIIs and Far Away", "Misty Mountain Hop", Since I've Been Loving You", "No Quarter", “The Song ‘Remains the Same", "The Rain Song and "Dazed ‘and and Confused", Throughout "Dazed" a great transformation takes place, Not only isthe jam incredible but the sound quality beings to improve steadily. By the time "Stairway to Heaven’ starts, the quality is amazing. Another great feature bout this show is that it doesn’t end after "Moby Dick". Its the complete show!_ A great version of "Heartbreaker" is played which goes into an awesome “Whole Lotta Love". Great jamming. during WLL, As if this wasn’t enough, they come ut for another encore. ‘The best "73 version of "Communication Breakdown" I've ever heard closes off the show. “The next soundboard show is Buffalo, NY July 26th, 1973, The sound quality is great and the performance is great as well. One thing 1 noticed is that Jones seems to bea bit more up front in the mix. You can hear him a little more clearly than the other shows, Not only can you hear him better but he also plays i Uifferent bass line every time, ‘The song list is basically the same. As Page begins “Over the Hills, redibly well He plays a Someone lets offa firecracker. Pant immediately comments: "That's one guy that’s not on the same Journey.” Unfortunately. the tape ends after "Stairway".
