WE USE PASSIVE VOICE WHEN: The subject of the action is unknown

PASSIVE VOICE ACTIVE VOICE

OBJECT + VERB TO BE ( PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE) + VERB (PAST PART) + SUBJECT

SUBJECT + VERB (PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE) + OBJECT

America was discovered in 1942 by Chistopher Columbus. PASSIVE VOICE


Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1942 ACTIVE VOICE

The books are printed in Hong Kong PASSIVE VOICE


The company print the books in Hong Kong ACTIVE VOICE

The houses will be destroyed by the hurricane PASSIVE VOICE


The hurricane will destroy the houses ACTIVE VOICE

EXERCISES……

1.- Read the following text and indentify six sentences in passive voice. Underline them.

In 2002, Mr. Moore was introduced to the members of our club by Mr. Cooper.
Mr. Cooper introduced Mr. Moore to the members of our club in 2002
Mr. Moore and Mr. Cooper were best friends and classmates at the university.
They were educated by very good teachers.
Very good teachers educated them.
Mr. Moore was accepted as a new member by the membership Committee.
The membership committee accepted Mr. Moore as a new member.
Last year he was elected president of the club by the members.
The members elected him president of the club last year.
He was congratulated by his friends.
His friends congratulated him.
His wife Lisa is a lovely person.
She is treated very kindly by all the members, and she is invited to their parties.
All the members treat her very kindly, and they invite her to their parties
2.- Write sentences in the passive voice in simple present tense, as in the example:

BMW are made in Germany // Germans make BMW


Diamonds are mined in south America // In south America mine diamonds
Apples are grown in California // In California grow apples
Wine is maken from grapes // From grapes make wine
Bread isn’t sold at the library // The library doesn’t sell bread
Baseball is played at the sradium // the teams plays Baseball at the stadium
The classroom is painted every year // The people paint the classroom every year

3.- Change the following sentences into passive voice, use simple past

Jhon lennon sang “imagine”…………. Imagine was sung by Jhon lennon


Marconi invented the radio …………… the radio was invented by Marconi
Farmers grew oranges in Valencia…......Oranges were grown by farmes in Valencia.
The police arrested ten people after the concert .. ten people were arrested by police after the concert.
Mary found the boys sleeping under a tree… the boys were found by Mary sleeping under a tree
My father built our house ten year ago……. Our house was built by my father ten year ago

4.- Change the following sentences into passive voice. Use future simple.

The guys will make a cake for tina’s birthday//the cake will be made by the guys for tina’s birthday

Passive voice for future simple (Be going to):


They are going to prepare the dinner // the dinner is going to prepared by them.
Passive voice in progressive tenses: to be past present + being + past. Partic
I am teaching English // English is being taught by me
He was singing a song // A song was being sung by him

INTRANSITIVE AND TRANSITIVE VERBS

Intransitive verbs do not have object; they can be use in active voice.
Diane walks to college.
Transitive verbs have object; they can be used in active and passive voice as well
Diane drinks milk every morning // Milk is drunk by Diane every morning

1.- Change the following sentences into passive voice form (be going to):
I’m going to paint my room // My room is going to be painted by me
She is going to watch a movie // A movie is going to be watched by her
Jack is going to buy a car // A car is going to be bought by Jack
We are going to study biology together // Biology is going to be studied by us together
The boys are going to visit their grandparents // the grand parents are going to be visited by the boys
My dad is going to read the newspaper // the newspaper is going to be read by my dad

2.- Choose the right option and fill the gap.


They were interviewing her for the job // she was being interviewed by their for the job.
Tom is writing the letter // the letter is being written by tom.
Everyone is going to pay the taxes // The taxes are being paid by everyone.
The professor will be telling us the final grades // the final grades will being told us by the professor.

3.- Change the following sentences into passive voice form (present progressive):
Peter is buying a ball // A ball is being bought by Peter.
She is making cookies // Cookies is being made by her
The teacher is correcting the exams // the exams are being corrected by the teacher
I’m giving the keys to Tom // The keys are being gave to Tom by me
He is offering money to me // Money is being offered to me by him

4.- Change the following sentences into passive voice (past progressive):
The children were drawing some animal pictures/Some animal pictures was being drawn by the
children.
They were throwing some papers to me // Some papers were being thrown to me by them.
The workers were reading the memo // The memo was read by the workers.
PASSIVE VOICE IN PERFECT TENSES.
(Use have or has been + past participle)
They have cleaned the house // The house has been cleaned by them
We had done the homework // The homework had been done by us
PASSIVE VOICE WITH MODAL VERBS.
You should do your homework // Your homework should be done by you
She can make cookies // Cookies can be made by her
They have to prepare their speech // their speech has to be prepared by them
We must tell them the truth // The truth must be told them by us
She would write the letter // The letter would be written by her
You might see dolphins here // Dolphins might be seen by you here.

1.- Rewrite the sentences using passive voice (present perfect):


Steven has forgotten the book // The book has been forgotten by Steve.
The mechanic has not repaired the DVD recorder // The DVD recorder hasn’t been by the mechanic.
The girls haven’t lost the match // the match hasn’t been lost by the girls.
Alex hasn’t learned the poem // The poem hasn’t been learned by Alex
Julia has rescued three cats // Three cats have rescued by Julia
Someone has taken my purse // My purse has been taken by someone.

2.- Rewrite the sentences using passive voice (past perfect):


The students had handed in the reports // The reports had been handed by the students
Maria has crashed into the blue car // The blue car has been crashed by Maria
They had played handball // Handball has been played by them
Sue had put the rucksack on the floor // The rucksack had been put on the floor by Sue.
The teacher had opened the door // The door had been opened by the teacher

3.- Rewrite the sentences using the passive voice (modal verbs):
I can ask a question // A question can be asked by me
She must do her homework // Homework must be done by her
